Can‘t create a Windows Seven USB drive using Bootcamp

Hi! I ve been trying to create a Windows Seven bootable USB drive using the Bootcamp Assistant. I tried to create it using an ISO of my Windows DVD in order to install it on my new Mac Mini. My problem is that I get an error: Your bootable USB drive could not be created, an error occurred while copying the windows installation files. My USB drive is 8G, and I‘ve tried with a 100G external HDD too... So it‘s not a size problem. I also tried to format the drive different ways without any success... I found lots of threads relating to this problem but none of them had a solution. Any clues? Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone - I know many of you are finding that either a new USB stick or ejecting and removing the ISO file in Disk Utility to work for you but this did not work for me. I found another solution after MUCH searching that did work and wanted to post here in case it may help.

1. Launch Disk Utility with your USB drive pluged in.

2. Select "Partition"

3. Under partition layout select "1 partition".

4. Under format select "Free Space".

5. Select "Apply".

This will more cleanly prepare your thumb drive for the ISO. It's the only thing that worked for me!

To be clear - I did also eject & remove the ISO in Disk Utility as well, although it only worked when performing the above as well.

This is a joke!

Moved over from windows. Experienced user. Work for IBM. Know what I'm doing.

Brand new install of mac os x 10.8.4

Have used bootcamp succesfully ONCE and it worked great.

Deleted my bootcamp partition because i needed to re-adjust the size of it.

Have tried

1. Reinstalling mac os x (erase and install, not archive)

2. the original 16GB usb that worked initially.

3. A difference windows ISO that i know isn't corrupt.

4. A brand new 1 TB hard drive.

5. restarting

6. unmounting the iso file from disk utility

Being technically minded i know that once you have done a clean reinstall, you have essentially isolated the issue to the hardware/a bug that is native to the operating system.

Seems there is no solution for this problem considering this forum has 21 replies and only one like on the main " solution". Man, you don't often get dead ends like this in windows.

Ok. Found my solution.

It seems Bootcamp is corrupting The install.wim file from inside the sources folder in the .ISO upon writing it to USB.
I have comfirmed this with 3 different proven to work cd Images.

My fixed was to have bootcamp create the bootcamp bootable USB and then add the install.wim file from the .ISO you used to create the bootcamp usb.

Start your mac up by holding the option key and boot up from the usb.

That did it for me.

Hope this helps.

I FIGURED IT OUT!!!

Firstly, make sure the ISO you have does any 3rd party software or addons and is the original image from Microsoft.

Secondly, make sure you have an 8gb USB for your bootable USB. Mac OS does this weird thing where it makes a backup image while its creating the bootable disk (so if your iso is around 4gb you'll need a 8gb usb.)

Thirdly, before you do anything in bootcamp, open Disk Utility and reformat the USB to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". The reason for this is if your USB is in any format other than Mac OS Extended the USB can be read by both PC and Mac, however, you cannot copy files larger than 4gb onto that drive from your Mac. (Just some silly compatibility problems). Keep in mind that when you format the USB to Mac OS Extended, you will not be able to read the USB from a PC. So after the bootcamp process is complete you might want to format it back to FAT (if you need it to be compatible with both Mac and PC).

Lastly, if you've been having the "Your bootable USB drive could not be created, an error occurred while copying the windows installation files." error then after you reformat the USB to Mac OS Extended, eject the USB, quit Bootcamp Assistant and restart your computer (just to make sure you reset everything).

Then go for it!!! Its garunteed to work!
