my desktop (including dock and menu bar) has suddenly become too big fit on the screen. how do i resize it?

It's really easy to do this by accident: holding down ctrl while scrolling does it.

This might happen on any model of Mac. This isn't a video problem.

This is a silly keyboard shortcut which is activated by default within:

System Preferences... > Accessibility

To get rid of this unwanted zooming everytime you scroll with a finger

or an iPhone left on the control key by accident,

Thank you Niel!! Re the problem with the display being too big to fit the screen. I had exactly the same problem as geraintfromswansea and was completely stymied. Never even thought of Universal Access being at fault. Must have hit the keyboard command somehow to turn on magnification. Fixed now thanks to you.

Turn off Zoom from the Universal Access and Keyboard & Mouse panes of System Preferences.

Go to your apple icon at the top - click on it and go to Dock. Turn off the magnification or resize from there.
