I had the same issue! The phone (iPhone 4S 16 GB White) refused to turn off while unplugged - always rebooted instead of turned off. While plugged to computer or wall outlet - it was possible to turn it off. Also - run through the battery like crazy - even in airplane mode (~15% battery drop in 6 hours in airplane mode).

What I tried, which did not help:

  • restarted phone
  • drained the battery till empty
  • restored to factory settings through iTunes (multiple times)
  • restored from backup (multiple times). strangely the restore from backup did not restore apps, which I thought as odd

The next day I removed the SIM card to take the phone to service and it magically solved the issue! After reinserting the sim card and restoring from the exact same backup as before - it restored it fully with all apps and settings!

Hi there: One more with the same problem in my white iPhone 4s. I noticed it started after the last system update. Same symptoms: can't turn it off, it always restarts -it was a serious problem when I traveled by plane and the crew asked to turn off any electronic devices! -, I only can turn it off when connected to computer.

There's also a fast battery drain that didn't happen before.

And iTunes didn't work as it should but shows only computer code.

Besides that, it has a recurrent problem: the silent button doesn't work any more, as it happened with my old 3G model.

Any solution from Apple?

Thanks!

One more here. iPhone 4S/64. It reboots when any attempt is made to power down. Phone will power down while connected to computer but as soon as USB cable is disconnected the device reboots. It's been cleaned. Twice. It's been reset and restored as new. Twice. It's been reset and restored from backup. Twice. Nothing fixes or even affects the condition. It simply refuses to power down.

I remember a time, not so long ago, when Apple products were known to be rock solid and reliable. Nowadays it seems Apple wants to be known only for being trendy and hip ... and reliability has taken a back seat. I am reading about this problem (phones refuse to power down) on sites all across the internet, not just here. These are not isolated incidents. There is something wrong with these phones. Apple should be owning up to it, finding out what the problem is and calling them in for a free repair. I mean we pay a hefty premium price for these things but we don't get a premium product or premium service.

Hi, BMW-KTM I agree with you 100%. I read in a Mac Rumors forum that this is a hardware problem with the connector, but no one from Apple said said anything. It was a good time when Apple manufactured its products in the U.S.A. Sadly, we can't expect the same quality from China manufacturers: who knows the real working conditions of the employees over there...

Update: I leave forgotten my phone on a box and allowed full discharge, then I remembered it and connected to the charger, then I powered it on, after full charge completed I disconnected and tried again to power off it unplugged... Ta daaa it powered off, so seems the full discharge "solved" the issue, ow it's an normally working 4S.

Please if you repeat my "solution" to verify if it solves in the non - power off issue, post here your results.

Hi there, JoseAngelAcosta!

Unfortunately your tip didn't work on my iphone 4s (with less than 10 month of use) and it's impossible turn it off. I'm considering to buy another smartphone, like samsung galaxy, while I have to wait the 2 [two!] weeks for Apple response in Brazil to replace my iphone - because it's still under the 1 year warranty - for another without, hopefully, problems.

e agora, José?
e agora, você?

And IOS 7 is even more power hungry than IOS 6 was, which was more power hungry than IOS 5.

NO THANK YOU.

I have already made up my mind that when my iPhone becomes too outdated to use or if it should break down I will not replace it with another Apple phone. Quality and battery life keep going down and prices keep going up. By the time we get to IOS 10 we will no longer have mobile phones, we will have land lines that use cel towers for communication because we will have to constantly be plugged in, the way battery life keeps degrading. My iPad had a critical breakdown, fortunately within the first 15 days and I was able to get a full refund. My phone crahses mysteriously sometimes and won't power down and now they want me to "upgrade" to an even worse IOS? Not gonna happen.
