iPod Classic 160GB Freezes When Plugged In

The problem: When I plug my iPod into a computer (for any reason, whether to use as a flash drive (data usage enabled in iTunes), or just to charge), it locks up and is rendered almost unusable.

The temporary workaround: If I hold down Center and Menu for the six seconds while Hold is turned off, it force-restarts and works as it's supposed to (even if it's still plugged in).

The additional details: This happens on both Windows 7 and Windows XP, and I assume it happens on Linux as well (but never actually tested), and the only thing that freezes on the computer when this happens is the hardware plugin stuff (e.g. if I plug my phone in while my iPod is in the frozen state, the computer won't register the phone as plugged in until I unplug or force-restart the iPod).

To assist in troubleshooting,

What is your iPod firmwqare number?

What is your iTunes version?

Firstly do a backup of your iPod data, as the following (RESTORE) will erase your iPod, the iPod firmware need to be updated.

Put your iPod in Diskmode

Then connect it to your PC.

Launch iTunes and Restore your iPod.

Good Luck!

what ive noticed is if theres is a song either playing or paused, it will freeze. if there is nothing playing or paused, it wont have a problem. im running firmware version 2.0.4.

I never noticed this before but now that you mention it, mine does the same.

He's not saying "i try to play through the computer and it freezes" - he's saying if he's got a song loaded on his iPod (i.e. he can go to the Now Playing screen and see an actual song), it will freeze. When there is no song loaded (end of playlist, etc), it works fine. Apparently the problem lies within the iPod "unloading" the song.

It's not feasible for me to just "skip to the end" of a playlist, because I put my entire music library on shuffle most of the time I use my iPod. That's approximately 13,000 songs.

Can I just say, this still appears unresolved. I would suggest its time to ask for specification of the PC.

What exact hardware do you have?

The easiest way to tell us this information if you are unsure, is by downloading a small reputable application called PC Wizard. This allows users to create a very informative and concise hardware inventory. You simply cut and paste the text into this thread.

We also need you to provide the exact model power supply unit. This will be located either at the rear top or bottom of the computer. On it, there will be a sticker, we need the model number. While you're there right down the 12V rail amperage numbers. There may be up to 4, but usually 2 or three (1 in high end PSUs).

It works like this, 12V+1 - 18A, 12V+2 - 18A and so on. Just right down the model number and corresponding 12V amperage. Either that or the max compined 12V wattage.

So

  1. Use PC Wizard to generate hardware report http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/pc-wizard.html
  2. Record 12V rail voltages or total compined wattage (W) - this is different to the TOTAL wattage.

What I think is happening is that:

  • You connect your ipod to your computer
  • Computer tries to charge ipod battery via USB (USB 2.0 has a max battery charge current of 5A (60W)). Thats not insiginicant.
  • If your PSU is cheap or old and you do this the 12V rail will 'droop' going out of ATX specifications causing the freeezes and restarts

Essentially, tell us your hardware and we can confirm if your PSU is the cause - as I am almost certain it is.

Please don't skip the detail otherwise it will take longer.

Bigfella, In case there is a typo, where did you get the spec for USB2.0 current draw?

Computer tries to charge ipod battery via USB (USB 2.0 has a max battery charge current of 5A (60W)). Thats not insiginicant.

To be classified as USB2.0, the port is limited to a max draw of 500mA

The USB Battery Charging Specification of 2007 defines new types of USB ports, e.g., charging ports.[46] As compared to standard downstream ports, where a portable device can only draw more than 100 mA current after digital negotiation with the host or hub, charging ports can supply currents above 0.5 A without digital negotiation. A charging port supplies up to 500 mA at 5 V, up to the rated current at 3.6 V or more, and drop its output voltage if the portable device attempts to draw more than the rated current. The charger port may shut down if the load is too high.

Have a nice day!

Hi, I also freeze and get the "blue screen of death" every time I hook my iPod up to my PC.

1. I've deleted ITunes and reinstalled on my PC

2. Also done a wipe-out and reinstall of the original firmware on my iPod

3. I've also done a clean re-boot without anything else running

4. Hooking the iPod to the PC crashes it! Aghhhhhhhhh!!!!!
5. Can't even do a CTRL-ALT-DEL to get out of freeze.

6. All other programs and hardware work on the Workstation including all othe USB devices, Music Programs and such.

Using Dell M6600 Work Station - 64bit - 16GB MEM.

Have had issues with the PC not finding iPod in the past but intermittent

Very frustrating!

TVStaff, can you do theiPod Disk Diagnostic as posted by tt2 , it wont fix your problem, but help us in troubleshooting, as I think your iPod Hardisk has a lot of bad sectors, causing the PC to hang, trying to access it.

Suggestions:

  1. disconnect all other USB devices, when you are trying to sync or restore your iPod Classic.
  2. Dont use any USB hub for the iPod, connect it directly to the USB 2.0 port at the back of your Desktop. (if you are using a Desktop)
  3. Disconnect from Internet and stop the Antivirus, as most plugins, conflict with iTunes causing timeouts and filesystem corruptions.

Have a nice day!🙂

Jun 26, 2012 12:24 AM in response to TVSTAFF

TVSTAFF, your iPod is still in great condition, except for the 2 Pending Sectors, which is most probably due to failed sync, but can be corrected using low level format tools like HD Sentinel or USEASE.

Or you can try DOS Command line

CHKDSK drive: /R /F

where drive: is the iPod drive ID like E: or F:

After you have corrected the Pending sector, try to sync, but follow my suggestion on the USB. connections, it will work, if you dont have plugins running with browsers, email, facebook etc.

I have the exact same issue. Plugging the ipod into any of my USB ports results in the screen freezing (the lock icon always shows, regardless of whether or not the device lock switch is on) and I have to do a hard reset to get it to work again.

I've got a Seasonic Platinum 1000 power supply. Tested recently, still putting out power beautifully. It's a VERY capable power supply.

I can see this is a known issue with very little results. I'm also havinf the same problem with my iPod Classic 160g 7th Gen. This is not even a full year old, however this happens on both laptop and PC. Everything is up to date:

iTunes Ver: 11.1.5.5

Firmware: 2.0.5

USB max power for iPod is 500ma

SMART data is

Retracts: 0

Reallocs: 0

Pending Sectors: 0

Power On Hours: 26

Starts/Stops: 2534

Temp Current 29C

Temp Min 1C

Temp Max 51C

PC: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz, 4GB Ram 64-bit Win7 Untilmate

Laptop: Alienware Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz 4GB Ram 64-bit Win7 Home

As mentioned earlier, if I pause a song and then connect to the computer my iPod freezes and iTunes never detects it. Also Windows USB Device does not show it so I cannot safely discconnect it. My computer works fine, I can close iTunes and open other files. I have to do the reset then connect it again. I've done the whole format, earse, restore and reset. Still this is happening. I did not have this problem before the latest updates.

Now there is a new issue happening. When I tried to do the restore or format, it tells me that another application is using it. Even tho I close iTunes I still get this message when trying the format. I click yes to continue and it says that the format is complete, but the problem still occurs when a song is paused.

I can play a song off of the iPod thru iTunes when it is working proberly. Has anyone found a fix for this issue?

Also is it normal for the iPod to only have a 148gb of free space? And has anyone else had a problem with the iPod skipping over a song on the playlist when it is on the device and can be played thru iTunes?
