My FCE 4 was no longer loading, so I uninstalled it and tried reinstalling it. When I get to the "Custom Install" page, Final Cut Express is unchecked and greyed out. Only LiveType is available for installation.

I had done that already. It seems as though it was not entirely uninstalled. Are there any instructions anywhere to manually uninstall? Sometimes uninstalls don't actually uninstall all the bits and pieces.
To clarify - you ran FCS remover and still cannot do the install?

I think this issue has been fixed in newer versions of FCS Remover but Tiger users can't update beyond version 2.5.6.
These sorts of issues can be caused by receipts remaining on your system. Please can you type the following command into the Terminal so that I can see the contents of your Receipts folder and advise you which files to remove:

That's very strange - there's nothing in that folder related to Final Cut Express, so it should reinstall just fine. Perhaps the data is being temporarily cached - did you restart your computer after uninstalling?
If all else fails you can use Pacifist to extract the files from the DVD onto your hard drive:
Here are Apple's instructions for manually removing Final Cut Express. Note there are differences depending on the version of FCE and OS X. You have a combination (FCE 4 + Tiger) that is not anticipated in Apple's technical support documents, so you may have to interpolate among the instructions.

As for removing any receipts, make sure you are looking in /Library/Receipts and not in /users/yourusername/Library/Receipts. Look for this file: /Library/Receipts/FinalCutExpress.pkg
There is one other file that may be causing this issue - look in /Library/Application Support/ProApps for a file named Final Cut Express System ID. That is the license file and if it's there, it may be the reason the installer thinks the app is already installed. You can delete this file if you plan to reinstall FCE from the DVD.

Thanks for trying everybody, but none of this is helping. In fact, Pacifist is exhibiting the same problems starting up that FCE had before I uninstalled it. I'm guessing there's something wrong with the OS/machine itself. All my other apps (25 or so) seem to be functioning fine but not FCE. Nothing's changed FCE just decided it didn't want to work anymore.

Yes, I am doing the uninstall/reinstall in the same account that FCE was originally. It is an admin account.
I did upgrade QuickTime recently. I'm using 7.6.4. About six months ago I had to reload the OS. Maybe that has something to do with it as well?
I was working with virusbarrier a while back. Since the last time I used FCE, anyway. After I reloaded the OS. What are you thinking here? Is there a connection?
