Problems opening PowerPoint files after 10.7.3 server update

Anyone find a workaround to this issue? I recall this same problem on 10.5 server and there was a workaround.

save it as a new powerpoint document (pptx not ppt) and it will work

the failure is different as in lion server. in lion any can not open PPT-Files from Windows over SMBX. In mountain lion can the "owner" PPT-Files from Windows over SMBX, the other´s not...

for example

1. my server is in AD-Domain.

2. a share "testshare".

3. two users "user a" and "user b".

4. this user are in a group "testgroup".

5. the testshare has read/write for the group "testgroup"

the "user a" save an ppt-file in the share. he can open, work and save the file. when "user b" comes can NOT open the ppt-file. its tricky with ppt-files and the rights or oplock management. i don´t know

pptx and other files, doc, docx, xls, xlsx…etc.pp has no problem.

only the old ppt files make problems.

I just spent days with Genius, Apple Care and Microsoft on this issue. Lion or newer will not work with MSOffice 2008 or older without several known problems. if the file was created on a windows machine, the encryption is such that it will not work on Lion or newer. Snow Leopard is not a problem. The recommended fix from MS is to upgrade Office to Office 2011...

This only affects the 1 PC user in our office - the rest of us are on Macs and we have the Mac Mini server. The PC user can only open off the sever if the file is .pptx - if .ppt then she gets this message:

We have too many .ppt to have to convert all to .pptx - Mac must find a solution and add to the next server udpate.

I tried this ACL fix on 10.8 and it did not resolve the issue. Also, BTW, the same problem is present in 10.8.3 Server. Windows users cannot open older PPT flies from the server. They can copy to desktop, then open once and save then copy the file from desktop back to the server. Then the file is fixed it seems. In my example we had Windows 7 and Office 2010.

i helped me with roll back to 10.6 server with samba. i have send many reports to apple since over a year and it is not fixed. i wait and test it in a vm-ware. -.-

"Engineering has determined that this issue behaves as intended based on the following information:

when PowerPoint is opening an older file (.ppt), it issues an SMB request to update the "Last Write Time" timestamp of the file. But the SMB server only allows the file owner to update the "Last Write Time" timestamp of a file.

This means only the file owner can open an older .ppt file with PowerPoint while other group members will get Access Denied.

When PowerPoint opens newer files (.pptx), it creates a temporary file and makes changes such as "Last Write Time" timestamp to the temporary file (which is owned by the current user), then it renames the file to the original name. This is why you don't see the issue with new format files an PowerPoint.

The ACLs that you configured are still important because they allow other group users to access your newer files (.pptx). But unfortunately ACLs cannot allow other group users to update timestamps (such as "Last Write Time").

Sorry for the inconvenience with older PowerPoint files, but I believe the server is behaving correctly.
