Unexpected high data usage on the iPhone

backed up through iTunes when I bought the sim free iPhone 4S...I'm assuming I can still back up with iTunes? That is so annoying have to admit.....

oh, I thought all iPhone are sim free :-). I also have an iPhone 4s, I am sure you can always do backups via iTune, right?

Not if your phone provider is Orange UK. Ok I'll do a back up through iTunes and go from there...this is very disappointing but at the same time I'm not surprised.

just remember, backup is to make sure that you don't loose anything, however you should not restore from the backup if you can manage without it. After the restore and upgrade to iOS6, you should observe your data usage for a day or two to confirm that your data usage is back to a normal level. Than you can try to restore from your previous backup.

by "restore and upgrade to iOS6", I meant restore to factory settings, and upgrade...good luck!

So Orange is in UK, do you have Genius Bar in Apple Stores in UK? They are extremly helpful.

hey everyone, I just ordered the iphone 4 with AT&T, I'm a new customer, I haven't received the phone yet, so any tips for someone like me that hasn't even used their phone yet? what should I turn off on the phone, so this problem won't happen to me.

I did a back up through iTunes and restored back to the phone and looks like somehow it's cured the problem...still monitoring it..

Genius at apple store said they're aware of the problem existing in the UK for people on the Orange network

Thanks for the info. I'm slightly confused as if it were the phone service provider's fault why was it then corrected once I did a back up and restore? The problem started with the OS6 update and not before. Typical Apple trying to pass the buck I think.

the restore worked for me for the first few days then the problem came back (while I was checking my mobile twitter feed the phone used 27-30MB within two minutes, that's just crazy).

The "interesting" thing is that every time I've spoken to Orange about it (4 times in the last 10 days) all they say is "would you like to buy more data?"

Unless they've messed up with the Everything Everywhere 4G thing. I'm still not entirely convinced. At the end of the day if Orange have messed up its not in their best interest to sort out as they will lose customers. I really do believe its an OS6 glitch.

Haha!! Yes I spotted that too Tony...am downloading as I type...I am soooooo telling you this will probably correct all this data crap for sure. I had a feeling we would get an update very soon.

Can anyone give any guidance why, when I'm connected to WIFI that I still see increments of cellular data? Surely this defeats the purpose of using the cheapest connection wherever possible.

As it happens I've been hammered this month and IOS isn't reporting accurate mobile data considering it thinks i've used 75 meg since my last reset but O2 are claiming on Monday I used 300MB.

Even after the 6.0.1 update I'm refreshing mail whilst connected to Wifi and seeing increments on the Cellular.
