Unexpected high data usage on the iPhone

I have since November changed from an iPhone 3G to an iPhone 4S and recently noticed a triple increase in data usage (with additional costs incurred). While I used below 250 MB before I'm now using 470+ MB. A Genius at the Bar recommended to switch off Location Services and Cellular Data, but that doesn't really make sense. Is anyone aware what services might consume exorbitant amounts of data (maybe in background processes)?

Is there an app, that monitors data transfers and could give me some clue as to what app or services use most data?

I've asked my operator to tell me if they would be able to let me know which services might have consumed so much data, but due to privacy regulations they are not allowed to access my data usage history.

I have also read somewhere that Siri uses a fair bit of data, but I haven't used that too much either.

I'm on ATT using an iPhone 4 and for the 2nd month in a row since upgrading to iOS 6, I've exceeded the data usuage...yet have basically all cellular usuage settings adjusted so it should not be using any cellular data unless I use safari for internet and have no wifi connection at that moment. On top of that, I updated to 6.0.1 in hopes that might fix it but watched it during a 15 minute window use cellular data even though the entire time it was connected to wifi. What is going on that it continues to use cellular data a little bit at a time such that over 30 days it adds up to alot and being over my usage limit?????

Called ATT and that seems to be like chasing one's tail. Round and round in circles on the phone. Their answer was turn cellular data off. Okay, that's great but then why am I paying X dollars a month for a data plan that I have to turn off and never had to do such a thing prior to iOS6. Such silliness. Apple techs, if you'e watching this thread, please help with this issue...it's getting very expensive and ATT doesn't have a clue what to do.

i am having the same problem with ATT!! i upgraded from the 4s to the 5. i backed up the 4s and restored it to the new 5 just like with every apple device i own. no change in the settings since it is a mirror image of my last phone. I just happened to check the data usage for ***** and giggles and after just three days it used 1.2GB of data! i have never used more than 2.7 in a month!! btw the usage was after i updated to 6.01 so that clearly did not help whatsoever... i called att today and they told me ths ame crap, turn off your celluar setting when in a wifi area. Are you serous? what a pain. if this is not fixed this month i will be returning my iphone to apple and changing networks to verizon, a real network!

Iphone 3GS. updated to iOS 6.0.1 Friday. Data usage until then about 300MB

Sunday Morning around 4am. Phone incredibly hot even though connected to charger and home Wifi network. Usage exceeds 3GB for month and extra 3.5GB. Total usage in 12 hours 6.5GB.

Sunday afternoon after receiving message from AT&T about excess data, turned off Cellular Data and 3G and limited to only Wifi.

Monday evening 2GB cellular data. Total data usage in 2 days 9GB????? W/T/F ???

Even when 3G and cellular data is turned OFF, 2GB used up?

Now, turned OFF Cellular data and Wifi and using it as a regular phone with texting and calling. Maybe will buy a regular phone and be done with all these useless charges. Someone should be held accountable here.

PO.

I was having the same problem, but i sloved it..

Try this:

Delete your icloud account from >> settings then go to icloud delete it from there then sgin in again with your same apple id.

It'll take some of your internet cridet at begaining until it downloads evrything was connected to your icloud account, then it'll stop eating your credit.

My wife's having the data leakage issue, like many others have posted. She uses WiFi 95% of the time, and yet her data usage is all of a sudden 3 times higher than what it's normally been (she's never gone over her data limit).

She has turned off cellular data and other data sliders in all the apps that have it. She doesn't use iCloud. Still, this leakage persists. It's to the point where she's afraid to have her phone turned on at all. The wireless carrier (Bell Canada) doesn't have any answers. We'll reach out to Apple soon, but based on what others have said, they aren't acknowledging this issue.

We haven't gone the route of a factory reset yet. How successful has that been for everyone? Has anyone plugged the leak for good? I'm open to any and all suggestions.

I'm not an Apple user, but have enjoyed using her phone in the past. This recent discovery about IOS6's apparent data leak, though, and Apple's lack of response has left me thoroughly unimpressed.

As always, the user base in the forums is a stronger support network than the carriers/manufacturers. Thanks to everyone for their helpful suggestions.

Hi there

A couple of weeks ago I did a back up and restore as my data was being chewed faster than an athlete running the 100 metres! It seemed to have done the trick. I was not surprised the 6.01 software update was released. Again all was fine.

A couple of days ago I checked and my data usage was looking great and right for what I had used, so nothing unexpected.

I just had a look and have noticed over 100mb suddenly disappeared. Very ideas I mostly switch to wifi anyway.

I am wondering as there were a couple of Facebook and twitter app updates this week and could have duff code causing data to be chewed?

I am getting pretty hacked off with all this data rubbish. Am tempted to ditch iPhone for a Samsung Android. I only get 500mbof data with my plan and I have never ever had a problem with the amoun but since all this OS6 it's been a data nightmare!

Apple please sort this out otherwise you'll start losing loyal customers!

I bought 2 iphone 5's 3 days ago from Verizon and already went over my data limit as well. My wifi connection kept getting switching back to LTE and I would incur high data usage even while I was not using the device. I was being charge data usage while I was sleeping. How crazy is that! After explaing this on the phone to a Verizon tech for about 2 hours his solution was to turn off my Celular Data and keep an eye on my data usage. What a bunch of B.S.! IPreviously I had the original Android and never had any of these problems and my data usage shared between 2 phones averaged 260MB every billing cycle. Needless to say I'll be returning the phone. What a big disappointment! (SCAM)

Count me in as well. Two iPhone 5s and used 750 MB and 824 MB in the first 5 days of my billing period. Just had to switch from unlimited to "share everything" with Verizon. Monthly average for past 6 months with our Iphone 4 and 4s were 1160 MB and 1450 MB, respectively. Makes no sense. Spent 45 minutes on the phone with Verizon asking them to explain why I had a 250 MB "charge" at 10:26 a.m. while phone was sitting on my desk at work. After a long conversation and the service rep going to "check if there were any tech notices" she agreed to put a note on my account and said I would not be charged if we went over our 6 GB limit.

This is pretty ridiculous.

Same here. Got the Phone Friday. Saturday, something remained connected (who knows what app was continually pinging the network) and burned 250mb of data. All while connected to w ireless. I think what's happening is something is running in the background that will keep using data.

Who knows what. VZW told me through chat there was nothing they could do for my bill.

Time to call support.
