Pop & smoke coming from macbook pro. Laptop died

Anyone else experience this rather strange phenomenon?

Purely out of goodwill, I am posting for this guy who purchased from me, a macbook pro 2.53 Ghz with 4GB RAM with a fresh install of Snow Leopard on it (gave him original discs etc with it). This machine worked like a charm with ZERO hassles while it was with me. ZERO hassles and it showed not even the faintest hint of any problem for the years I owned it. I took excellent care of it and it was in pristine condition working and looking like brand new even on the date of sale. Heck it was still giving me an easy 6 hours battery life and no signs of slowing down or anything.

Anyway, when he took it from me, he texted me close to the end of the day that apparently he was using migration assistant to transfer data from his old laptop to the MBP and he was about 10 minutes into the process wherein he heard a pop and then smoke came out from the back of the MBP and the computer shut down. I am at a COMPLETE loss of words, thoughts or ideas as to what the heck he did with the computer to have resulted in this smoky outcome.

  • Has anyone else experienced this issue? If yes, please please respond so this kid can be helped out.
  • Also, for something like this, what sort of backup or coverage does Apple provide? Of course the laptop was from 2009 with no Apple Care on it. Because honestly I could've taken care of most tech issues and never expected my laptop to emit smoke and get fried like that.
  • Thus, I am guessing and hoping that they uncondintionally take care of this issue because this is a very rare and strange phenomenon. Also, in all its probability, it's not like the kid was running a nuclear reactor through this MBP for it to go toast like this.
  • Could this be a batter issue? A power supply issue or a hard disc issue?

I would appreciate if someone could let me know anything related to such a problem (or similar) if it happened to them too. Any words of advice or suggestions would be most welcome as to how best to tackle this situation. I dont' want this kid to feel cheated off his money. If he is truly telling me honestly that it happened during just a file transfer then he needs to be helped and I want to provide him whatever information I can, so he doesn't lose his money.

Thank you for your time

This just happened to me...I got up from my desk to get some coffee, I heard a POP and my MacBook Pro started to smoke right in front of me!! It completely freaked me out.. smoke was pouring out of my laptop and filled the entire first floor of my house. I took pictures and called Apple immediatly...I was asked a series of strange questions and was told that my Apple Care is still valid through 2014. I sent my laptop off to engineering and got a call the next day from an advisor who told me that the laptop is "beyond economic repair". The senior advisor I am working with then told me that engineering is now looking deeper into the matter to see if it was a product failure OR if it was accidental...if they determine it was something accidental I am SOL. I was then told (in short) that accidental = something they have never seem before or is not a known issue. I am not 100% sure what that means...but it is starting to sound like they do not believe my story. I asked how I might catch the inside of my laptop on fire with zero external damage and I was told I may have spilled something on it...which really makes no sense to me. This is my 4th MAC, I have two iPads and two iPhones, a time capsule and the 27 inch display!! I am a loyal Apple customer, I buy the 3 year apple care package for everyting I buy and it has been very helpful in the past. Lets face it, the 17 inch MacBook Pro was not a $700 laptop....it was expensive. I am not sure what the outcome will be, but I hope they do the right thing and replace my laptop.

Maggie, this also just happened to me! WA causally browsing the interest and then bang, and all this smoke comes out. Scared the **** out of me! Really concerned is they replace it this could happen again and cause a fire when I'm not around. I have just switched from pc to mac but looks like I'll be going back! Btw, I have had the laptop for exactly 1 week, purchased brand new

Mine just DIED on me 20 minutes ago, which brought me here. My experience is not unique after all. I heard POP then smoke came out while I was browsing my vacation pictures, then my mac pro went completely dead. The power cord was plugged in, no other programs were running in background. I'm pretty sure this is a known problem given quite a few poeple reported the same in other threads. How did the replacing go? From what I read so far, not very smooth. It seems now Apple is leaning on user mis-usage and fending for a possible large recall and worse, potential fire hazard caused by design??!! I'm a customer for years and never had problem with apple products before. Now it's time to put customer service/support into test. I'm going to the shop tomorrow

I've just had the same thing happen here. A friend was using my MacBook Pro to watch a TV show on iTunes. It was running just fine and then made a pop and died. There was definitely no spill of any kind of liquid involved. At the time it was plugged in and had only moments earlier just reached a 100% charge. It had only been turned on for about 5 minutes so there was not enough time for it to get hot. There was no smoke but a very strong smell of fried electronics coming out of the left speaker. The machine was 4 years old so its warranty (can't remember if it was extended warranty or not) is clearly out of date. So this will not be a warranty claim. Based on the suggestions on this thread - the helpful ones not the sarcastic ones - I might take it in to an Apple store for a quote but I'm posting this to reassure some folks that this kind of thing can obviously happen sometimes even if there is no spillage of liquids involved.

This happened to me, too. About 1-2 weeks from the factory, a brand new late 2014 15 inch Macbook Pro Retina. Was checking and responding to email while plugged in. Heard a 'pop' sound and laptop screen as well as external display went black and machine went dead. Saw a puff of smoke come out from the left side ports; smelled like something had burnt. My place of work had bought the machine and my understanding is that Apple and/or the vendor refused to replace it with a new machine (I had heard that there is supposed to be a 30 day return period. If true it was not utilized), instead sending it for repair. I heard it was received back today and will update after I get it back in my hands and ask for information on how it was handled after it left my hands. Surprising experience with a brand new high-end MBP.
