How do I use Disk Utility to burn a playable DVD disk?

If you already have the video encoded in a DVD format (with VIDEO_TS folders and everything else) then yes; choose CD/DVD master as the disc format.

Disk Utility doesn't do any video encoding on its own.

File -> New image from folder -> choose the folder containing the video data -> choose CD/DVD master from the menu. After the image is created, drag it to Disk Utility's sidebar if it's not already there, click it once, and click Burn.

Put the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders inside a folder that has the name of the DVD as the folder name.

In Disk Utility, select File > Burn Folder to Disk... and select the target folder from the file dialog. Insert DVD, Click OK.

That's not enough (btw, make sure it's VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS.). To be playable on a DVD player, the files must be burned to disc in a specific, rigid order. See

If you don't want to use Roxio Toast or NTI DragonBurn, you have the following options:

It's a CLI tool, part of the cdrtools kit. Use mkisofs to create the disc image, then burn it with hdiutil or drutil, or Disk Utility.

Note that this question has come up several times before.

i'll create an image of the dvd then use the saftware call burn and use the copy option.

And remember to check the size of the DVD to make sure it will fit to a blank DVD. Not sure if Burn has Auto Compress or not like Toast.

I have a DVD that I created using iDVD. I created an image of it using Disk Utility then copied it to a new read/write image. What I need to do is add another "data" folder - kind of a hybrid DVD. I can burn it - but it won't play in a standard DVD player. I want to create a playable DVD that the recipient can put into their computer and get at the data folder as well.

How can I do that?
