How do I use Disk Utility to burn a playable DVD disk?

Can I produce a playable DVD disk (for use in a standalone DVD player) using Disk Utility?

Mac OS X (10.6.8)

No.

I do have the video encoded in DVD format (Video_TS and Audio_TS).

That's not enough (btw, make sure it's VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS.). To be playable on a DVD player, the files must be burned to disc in a specific, rigid order. See

DU does not do that.

If you don't want to use Roxio Toast or NTI DragonBurn, you have the following options:

mkisofs

<http://cdrecord.berlios.de/private/cdrecord.html>

It's a CLI tool, part of the cdrtools kit. Use mkisofs to create the disc image, then burn it with hdiutil or drutil, or Disk Utility.

DVD Image Utility (a wraparound for mkisofs)

Disco

<http://discoapp.com/>

no longer supported, but free, simple, and runs well under SL

LiquidCD

<http://www.maconnect.ch/>

free; iffy support, but, again, simple, and runs well under SL

Burn

<http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html>

open source; not clear how active development and support are, but runs well under SL

Note that this question has come up several times before.

I have a DVD that I created using iDVD. I created an image of it using Disk Utility then copied it to a new read/write image. What I need to do is add another "data" folder - kind of a hybrid DVD. I can burn it - but it won't play in a standard DVD player. I want to create a playable DVD that the recipient can put into their computer and get at the data folder as well.

How can I do that?

Thanks
