Im trying to install Sophos and/or Clamx, but it's not letting me, like if something is blocking the scanning window from launching.

Some details please. What version of OS X are you using. Have you downloaded the software to your hard drive? What do you mean by the "scanning window"? Are you talking about mounting the .dmg file to your desktop or launching the .pkg installer app?

My mac is 10.7 Lion; I have sned the software to my Applications folder as the instructions for Clamx indicates; by the window I mean the actual window with the scanning button on it. Whenever I download the software and try to run it it opens a window asking me to install the Clamx AV scaning engine so I press install but nothing happens.

For the Sophos, the same thing, I try to run it and a window under Terminal opens but it does not run it.

Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks

Sounds to me as if your Launch Services database has become corrupted. If you are having difficulty getting other applications to work, it may need to be rebuilt, but lets see if we can get this part of it working first.

  • Go to your /Applications/ directory (folder).
  • Right-click / Control-click on ClamXav and choose Show Package Contents from the popup menu.
  • In that window open Contents then Resources and single-click (highlight) clamavEngineInstaller104.pkg
  • Now go to the File menu of Finder and select Get Info or type Command-I.
  • In the window that opens go to the section Open with: (make sure the disclosure triangle to the left is pointing down.
  • If it says Terminal (or anything other than Installer) click on that popup menu and select Installer.
  • Then click on the Change All... button and Continue in the "Are you sure" dialog.

Now double-click on clamavEngineInstaller104.pkg and it should take you through the scanning engine installation.

The Sophos installer should now work, as well.

SOLUTION FOUND!!!!

Get rid of your road runner wireless modem! RoadRunner claims it was a Mac virus, I figured out it was their modem. After I got rid of my Road Runner wireless router and replaced it with a new regular cable modem connected to Apple Airport extreme, everything went perfectly well. no more viruses! I've been free of road runner errors now for a few months.

I will admit that the Apple Airport extreme is a little pricey, but it's worth every penny to be able to use the Internet without road runner being stupid. Especially since road runner is the only high-speed Internet provider in my area.
