I can't record my keyboard?

I have a cheapo keyboard that I want to record in garageband, but there's no way of actually getting any kind of sound in garageband. I have the keyboard connected up to my computer via a USB cable that plugs into my keyboard via the headphone/output jack. The system recognizes the usb device is plugged in, but is it because my keyboard isn't specifically a usb keyboard that it's not working? Is there a way on garageband to record such a device?

If I left out crucial info, just yell at me and call me names, please.

Thanks in advance for the help!

For your setup you need to use a real instrument track. In garageband preferences choose the usb for input and either the computer speakers or built in output for output, depending on what you will be using to monitor. Then in the track info window turn monitoring on and you may need to choose the input try channel 1 mono if that doesn't work try channel 2 mono.

Depending on your mac you can just plug the headphone out on the keyboard to the mac audio input.

I've already set output to my built in output, and my input to mono 1 (there's no other option but this and built-in microphone).

I could try plugging the keys' output into the mac's input, but I don't have the proper tools for that on hand at the moment (and if I did do that, I'd have the problem of having no way to listen to what it is I'm playing--seeing how my only audio output would be used for my input.)
