remote login only works on local network?

I have my home computer ip address, and can connect remotely, but only when I'm on the same local network. If I try to connect from work, I get a "no such file or directory" or "server doesn't exist" message. What do I need to do to connect remotely?

Depending on what kind of connection you want to do, there are many solutions (most of which have to deal with getting past your home router, and in some cases corporate firewalls and proxy servers).

For easy screen sharing try TeamViewer.com, which also has the ability to copy files. TeamViewer.com also has the ability to work through corporate firewalls and proxy servers.

There are other screen sharing solution and if that is your desire, we can go into that further. It would help to know if there are corporate firewalls and proxy servers involved, as well as what you have for a home router.

For file sharing, that gets a little more complicated. The easiest way to move files between 2 systems would be using Dropbox.com on both systems (Dropbox.com works with Mac, Windows, and Linux systems).

Another approach if you want Apple File Sharing, then you could install and run Hamachi (from LogMeIn.com) on both systems, using the free for personal use option, you can setup a Virtual Private Network (VPN) between your 2 systems, then you can do file sharing and screen sharing across the Hamachi VPN.

Again there are other ways to do remote file sharing, but we would need more details to get into this further.
