How do I import avi Files to iTunes

I am having trouble importing avi files (movies) to my I tunes

iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iOS 5.0.1

That's fine, if you want a universal converter. Myself, I use Handbrake, and it's free. It keeps chapter markings and will even convert old DivX .avi's to iPod .m4v format. The only advantage I see to iMediaConverter is the flexibility of output format. HandBrake is designed to make m4v's and mp4's for iTunes/iPod/AppleTV; it cannot output to .avi or .vob.
