Where do I design my book cover in iBooks Author? What dimensions does it need to be?

I need to design the cover for my iBook - which I've created in iBooks Author. Where do I do this? Or do I just create it separately and upload it as an image once the iBook is finished?

If so, is there a set dimension or ratio (pixel height and width) which I should use? I've noticed in iBooks that lots of the books on the shelf have different sized covers. Is this possible to do with an iBook created in iBooks Author? Or is the size set by Apple? Where can I find this information?

I'm asking as I want to create quite a small square cover.

Thanks in advance

Thank you Jon,

There's a lot of answers (in the forum, not this particular thread) from people using Pages and it was nice to see someone answer directly what has to be done in iBook Author, instead of describing about Pages techniques. Not all of us have Pages and we're just using the iBook Author program.

Now I know what to do, since my original image was narrower than the iBook Author page size. I'll just modify its dimensions to 768 W, 1004 H. Cool Beans!

... assuming that's the same dimensions as the portrait book default format/page size 🙂

You can simply resize your trimmed image using Preview ( Tools > Adjust Size) in your iMac.

Screen shots and images in your content,- size can be 1024 x 748 or 2048 x 1536 for Retina iPad.

I use all images suitable for Retina and obviously they are Ok with every other iPad.

For the cover, the size needs to be 1400px Width ( mine then have a height of 1830px.

The 2 megapixel limit is ignored for book covers.

I used an old Windows program on my PC Ulead Photoimpact (1997) to adjust the dimensions. It has a Dimensions operation in the Format window. The 768 x 1004 size John mentioned fit perfectly onto the whole Title page for the book cover, for a portrait format novel.

The other images in the book were formated according to Kindle specs at 300 dpi. I didn't change them and they look ok on my iPad 3 in the Preview
