Q: Ding sounds for no apparent reason

In Settings > Sounds I have sound types chosen for Ringtone, New Voicemail, and Calendar alerts, None for all others.

However, I frequently hear a sound that sounds like Ding for no apparent reason.   There was no voicemail, calendar alert, or phone ring.

I think something is causing Ding which is not on the list of sound types - what is it?

The manual's paragraph on Settings > Sounds does not provide great detail.

Is "ding" the sound you device makes if connected to the computer? If yes, did you check your USB connection/cable if connected?

Are you getting an alert of some type from one of your apps?  You might try going to the notification center (swipe down from just above the clock/below the ear) to see if there are any notifications there.  To get out of the Notification Center, swipe up.

You could also go to Settings/Notifications to see any apps that are potentially giving notifications.

Well, if you'll forgive me, djomaha, that is my question, not an answer.  CAN an app can give a sound without being controlled by sound settings?  If so, how to (a) determine which app it was, (b) configure it to turn it off?

The notification center has stuff from Phone, Calendar, Facebook, Google Voice, Twitter, and Foursquare, none dated in the past hour (and there have been at least 3 dings since I wrote the original post 27 minutes ago).  There are Yahoo weather and Yahoo stocks are scrolling in the notification center.

Is this perhaps an alert that your iPhone is making to tell you that it cheked for email and found nothing new? I have never noticed either my iPad or my iPhone doing it, but both of my Macs do it.

Sounds for Native apps are controlled in Sounds.  Sounds for Apps you install are controlled in Notifications.  If you go to Settings/Notifications, you can see what apps are configured to give a sound.  If you don't have any recent notifications in the Notification Center, you might have to go through Settings/Notifications and turn off apps with sounds that are on, in a process of elimination.  It would have been great if you had a notification in the notification center that had alerted you recently, that would have lead you to the culprit.

OK, now we're getting somewhere.  So you are saying that Settings/Notifications, Notification Center:On, means the app might make a sound when it gives a notification.    If I turn Notification Center:Off, for all of them, it should delete all sounds, then I can turn them back on one by one to find the one that is making the sound.

Hmm, interesting.  I wonder if there are differences based on carrier?  I have AT&T and I don't have an option in Notifications to turn all notifications off the way you describe above.  But yes, if you turn them off (assuming it's an app that is alerting you), and then turn them on one by one you will hopefully find it.

No, I don't either - I can turn them off one by one.   And I did notice that several have a Sounds: On/Off option in their notification settings.  Twitter was one, and it was on - I suspect that was it.  It's been quiet for at least 5 minutes now!

Woohoo!  If you need to know that something posted to Twitter, you could leave the sound off but turn on the badge, but that might get annoying as well.  Glad it is working for you.

    I think I've solved it.

I just read this thread after googling for an answer about this topic.

I'm sure it's the Gmail app notification sound (that's the case for me anyway). The "Ding" means you have a new email... I've tried it 4 times and it is indeed the case.

Hello... I had this maddening thing happen with my iPhone 4s, and it took me a long time to get it rectified. I have had my iPhone 6 for just a little over a year and yesterday, the same thing began happening again. The bad thing is, I could not remember how I solved the problem with my 4s! The solution turned out to be that my charging cord needed to be replaced... it was a simple as that. The cord looks fine... but it began to not charge my phone, which is how I figured it out.
