In Settings > Sounds I have sound types chosen for Ringtone, New Voicemail, and Calendar alerts, None for all others.
However, I frequently hear a sound that sounds like Ding for no apparent reason. There was no voicemail, calendar alert, or phone ring.
I think something is causing Ding which is not on the list of sound types - what is it?
The manual's paragraph on Settings > Sounds does not provide great detail.

Are you getting an alert of some type from one of your apps? You might try going to the notification center (swipe down from just above the clock/below the ear) to see if there are any notifications there. To get out of the Notification Center, swipe up.
You could also go to Settings/Notifications to see any apps that are potentially giving notifications.
Is this perhaps an alert that your iPhone is making to tell you that it cheked for email and found nothing new? I have never noticed either my iPad or my iPhone doing it, but both of my Macs do it.
Woohoo! If you need to know that something posted to Twitter, you could leave the sound off but turn on the badge, but that might get annoying as well. Glad it is working for you.

My problem was caused by faulty cord also.
Same problem here except mine will do if if phone moves or shakes.
I solved my random “ding” by going into settings and turning off notifications to my email. Did not have this problem prior to my last update.
My IPad was dinging for no apparent reason. After many attempts, I discovered that the dinging stopped when I unplugged the charging cord.
