The difference is that a user might want to ask an iWeb related question to their web host's support department, but a lot of these hosts are only familiar with iWeb, but don't actually know how to use it, while Rage is able to provide better iWeb related support since they actually know a lot about iWeb.

Just so I know what you are referring to, what are some or all of these benefits that are not offered by Rage?

On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:

Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:

◼ Password protection

◼ Blog and photo comments

◼ Blog search

◼ Hit counter

◼ MobileMe Gallery

All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.

I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken. If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.

There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows. Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.

However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone. How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.

I, too, was looking for a reliable hosting company who would be able to "walk me through" the process of publishing via FTP rather than thru MobileMe. After scouring these discussions, I opted to go with IX Web Hosting, which is a sister company of Host Excellence. Their package that offers 2 dedicated IP addresses for $3.95 mo. was what I needed (one address for my domain name & one for my husband's domain).

I called them numerous times before I signed up with them and they were extremely helpful in going thru the steps to publish to them. I actually had a representative on the phone with me for about an hour, as she pointed out and waited for me to complete each step. My iWeb site had multiple pages that needed to be published separately - so it was a bit complicated for me to understand exactly what to do & in the order to do it... She was able to bring up the various pages to check & make sure things were working properly. I couldn't believe the customer support I received from them. I have had to call a few times since I made the hosting change & have gotten excellent customer support. In fact, I called today to answer a few quick questions - as I had to add another domain name to publish to. Again, they were very familiar with the iWeb process and publishing the second domain also worked perfectly!

I would not hesitate to recommend the IX WebHosting or HostExcellence - for their 24/7 live customer support is excellent! I don't think I could have navigated through all the steps if they hadn't been on the phone with me to give instructions...

This might be helpful for people outside the US.

I saw the Host Excellence website offered ‘toll free’ support on its local (USA) and international telephone numbers, but IX Webhosting did not (even though one number was the same). So I had a live chat with the IX rep (below) who said their tel support was only free within the US - both with IX and HE. The charge outside USA was ‘the charge of your local phone company’. I thought he meant the cost of a local call, but he didn’t.

I next phoned the HE toll free international number and asked for confirmation whether calls from the UK were free. The person went off to double-check and returned saying that they did not make any charge for international calls. If there was a charge it would be made by my local telephone provider.

I spoke to my telephone provider who looked up the call I’d made and said it had been charged at international call rates.

I don’t know if the HE website ‘toll free’ wording is technically correct or not, but it left me with the wrong impression that my telephone support calls would be free. (The IX website does not advertise ‘toll free’ calls.)

In the case of GoDaddy, however, I made a similar call to check out details, and my telephone provider confirms it was free (lasted 19 minutes). Strangely they don’t advertise free tel support, but use a local UK number which gets transferred to the US. They also have a UK dedicated website with prices in sterling, and so from that point of view at least they give a better service.

This is the live chat transcript with ix webhosting:

IX: Hello! My name is X. How may I help you today?

you: Are both your telephone support lines free for calls from UK and 24/7? 1-800-385-0450 or +1-614-534-1961

you: hello?

IX: Sorry no

IX Those are not free

you: Is there any free telephone support? And if not what are the charges?

IX: The charges are of your local phone company

you: thank you

IX: We are always online here, sir

IX: So you can always chat with us and we will solve any issues.

you: Thanks, I'm confused because the hostexcellence website says its tel support is toll free. I believe they are a related company and use the same support number of -614-534-1961?

IX: It is free from US only

IX: 614-534-1961 is international number

you: Ah I see. It should be clear on the website.

IX: Thanks, good suggestion

IX: Can I help you in any questions?

you: No that's all thank you.
