Just wondering the following.
I have an old mac.com email address.. Can I still use it in any capacity? What I am thinking is to be able to have an email sent to my mac.com email address forwarded to my gmail account. Is this possible and if so how?

If you let the .mac address expire before transfering to iCloud, then you will not be able to use that address. You will have to use the .me address. I believe you can still use that old ID (.mac address) to set up and log into iCloud since you had that address in the past if I read that right.
In Addition: From the website which is still a little confusing:

If you signed up for .Mac before July 11, 2008, and also had an active account after July 11th, 2008, then your mac.com ID will still work as an Apple ID for purchases on the iTunes Store, Apple Online Store, and to purchase Apple print products created with iPhoto or Aperture. You can continue to use your mac.com ID or your new me.com ID as an Apple ID (both names access the same account).
NOTE: If your MobileMe or .Mac account has expired, you should change the email address associated with the Apple ID. See Expired user names still valid for other services for more information.
I did not realize bots patrolled this site. Thanks for asking hosts to remove it. How come apple lets this happen?
They can't really do anything to stop that. Spambots patrol every site they can find. They can easily hide the fact that they are bots.
In answer to your question, I am not 100% positive if I let my .mac account to expire. I must still have the account as I am able to log into it in appleid.apple.com. So would that not mean the account is still registered to me?
That means that the Apple ID associated with that address still exists, but not necessarily that the address itself does. Unfortunately, if your MobileMe or .Mac account expired before you signed up for iCloud, that address is now gone.
My guess is this must be what is happening. I guess there is no way for me to register to get the address back?
If it expired, then there is no way to get that back. If that's the case, you must not have been using that email address for some time.
I would suggest that you go to your profile at the Apple site and change your Apple ID to the new address and just forget about the .mac address. No use to fight it any longer.
Yes I am beginning to think that. Apple sure does not make it easy when it comes to email address, account ID's etc. Very confusing. Not sure why they do it that way.
