Hi,
It shows up as a camera because there is a camera built into the device and Windows and Macs reconize it as a camera to help you organize your pictures. Hope this helps.

I really appreciate the quick response. Oddly enough there isn't a camera on my iPod. That is the strangest part. It doesn't show up in the control panel/camera folder either. It all seems very odd to me.....
What kind of device do you have?

It is a 32Gig iPod Touch. OS version 5.0.1 Model # MC008C
Is it a 4th Gen?

You have a 3G iPod without the camera. I guess iOS5 just assumes that the iPod has a camea. Just ignore it.
I suppose.... It is more an inconvenience. I would like to have the ipod (it is 3rd gen incidentally) as a "hard drive" on my computer thus allowing me to scan with antivirus and such. It would just be alot simpler. It is synced and hooked up with itunes and the like. Thank you so very much for your efforts. It has been very helpful thus far. Regards
Any pics saved with the ipod or screen shots will be stored in saved pics. These are imported to your computer as with any digital camera. If you have pics saved using the ipod, then it will show as a camera.

You cannot do this.
Sorry.
sure you can with third party apps. Try iexplorer http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/ (freeware) or Google search for ipod touch Disk drive for others.

Since there are no viruses for iOS, there's no reason to do that.
