iPod Classic

I have an iPod classic and I cannot download any songs on it. It is constantly freezing my iPod when it is connected to my computer and it is constantly freezing my iTunes. I have reset my iPod and tried to restart my iTunes but nothing is working. I even followed the instructions on this site and I cannot even get 2 songs to show up on my iPod. What do I do now?

Hi tt you really do seem to have this area covered taken me hrs to reach this level of detail after months of failed attempts but I think my stats look ominous?!

iPod classic about 4/5 yrs old 120gb

retracts: 38

Reallocates: 3456

Pending: 5856

power on: 129

Start/Stops: 12145

Current temp: 27C

what do you think ? Time to move on?

& more importantly what should I do different - I wouldn't say I had been a heavy user is the stat stops a problem?

Any advice appreciated

I think it is safe to say the drive is borked

All hard drives fail eventually, sometimes they deteriorate quickly, sometimes slowly, but once they start to go wrong they'll only get worse. The drive isn't supposed to get over 50C, letting it get too hot at some point may have been the cause, or it could just have been knocked a little too hard one time when the drive was active. I'm not certain, but the high start/stop count may actually be a symptom rather than a cause.

Options are self-repair, third party service, replacing it with the same model, or moving on to something else. I have an iPhone these days and while I occasionally miss having instant access to the more obscure corners of my library the other features of iOS more than make up for it.

Hey tt2, can you help me make sense of these numbers?

Retracts: 2

Reallocs: 8

Pending Sectors:24

Power on Hours:281

Start/Stops:46,146

Temp current: 26 c

Temp min: 56c

Temp max:245c

the temperature values just dont make any sense to me at all. the issue that im having is that when i plug my ipod into my computer itunes doesnt recognize it and everything freezes up. it is a 160 gb classic and when itunes locks up it doesnt pop up with a notification box saying "the ipod "insert name's ipod" is corrupt" and when i go into my computer (running windows xp) my ipod appears as an ipod, not an unreadable disc as suggested happens with other corrupted ipods.. my device is not in disk mode and is functioning normally and smoothly when i am using it daily. so needless to say i am beyond confused right now.

Starts/stops is high, but not a worry in itself. The reallocs & pendings are not too bad. There will be a problem connecting the device to iTunes if the critical database files or folder structures can't be read efficiently, so if the "pending" group includes something that iTunes wants to read it might explain the current difficulty. Reformating the device should fix the issue.

tt2,

My ipod classic was working ok until I plugged it into iTunes the other day and the display said it was syncing. When finished syncing and ejected, it said there was no music or anything on the ipod. (Although 90GB of the 160Gb HD showed as full in My Computer)

I then plugged in my working 4GB iPod into the PC and the exact same thing happened. It erased the content.

The iPod Classic data from today is as follows:

Retracts: 17

Reallocs: 9

Pending Sectors: 0

Poweron Hours: 555

Start/Stops: 43595

Temp Current: 27C

Temp Min: 55C

Temp Max: 255C

(Interesting to note that the air temperature here at the moment is about 16C).

The only other symptons it has shown recently is about a month ago I went to use the ipod and it had no content (like this). I successfull restored and re-syncing the data.

I suspected the problem was because the ipod was too cold (left in my car overnight in winter) and the second time this happened I put it in my pocket to warm for a while and the content magically came back on a reset without the need to restore.

Can you help? Thanks 🙂

My friend, as an unemployed student who has been without portable music (of over 8GB 😟 ) for about six-eight months and was two days away from paying £100 for a new iPod classic, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. The DFU restore worked an absolute charm and I am currently syncing my massive music library onto my beautiful and 120GB iPod. I can throwaway the piece of **** 8GB mp3 player I've been using all this time and dedicate the rest of my life to finding you and hugging you. Thank you so much brother, peace be with you for the rest of your days. May your hemorrhoids shrink without surgery.
