iPod Classic

I have an iPod classic and I cannot download any songs on it. It is constantly freezing my iPod when it is connected to my computer and it is constantly freezing my iTunes. I have reset my iPod and tried to restart my iTunes but nothing is working. I even followed the instructions on this site and I cannot even get 2 songs to show up on my iPod. What do I do now?

I can't even get to the diagnostics menu. My Classic

  • reboots but won't go to DFU or any other diagnostic page, it just goes back the "language" setting
  • ITunes tries to restore but sort of gives up, saying the new hardware is messed up
  • iTunes doesn't acknowledge the device is connected. After I restore it, it shows up but doesn't allow me to synch.

Is it cooked?

thanks

Hmm, not seen that behaviour personally. Getting into DFU mode can be a bit hit & miss, but if the firmware is up to asking for a language then it should be able to get into diagnostic mode unless there is an issue with the control buttons. I assume this is a 6th gen. Older models may have slightly different sequences for diganostics & DFU modes.

I think it's time to call it. The hard drive has failed. Your call whether to try to get the drive replaced or replace the whole unit. As to why, all hard drives fail eventually. How long each lasts is a combination of factors from the final build quality through how many times you dropped it and how hard, let it get too hot and/or cold, jogged with it etc.

Is it possible that not using the "safely remove hardware" or not ejecting the device from iTunes could cause such a problem?

No

If the hard disk is damaged, can it be replaced/repaired by Apple or is it more sensible to just get a new device?

I don't think Apple do a hard disk replacement service as such, but they might offer a refurbished product at a discount over the new price. There are third parties that will do hard drive replacement, or you can attempt to do it yourself. Having replaced batteries in a couple of iPod video aka 5th generation models in the past I can tell you that the hardest part is getting the case open. Almost impossible to do without some damage to the case unless you are skilled, careful, and have the right tools.

A new machine obviously has the benefit of being new. For each of the other appraoches the cost & warranty protection will be different. It is up to you to weigh the options against each other and make a decision as to which suits you best.

It is supposed to be the number of times the motor that spins the disc has been started. Typically the drive will be run each time you play a new song, explore the playlists, or update the device. During playback when the remainder of the song has been loaded into memory the drive will spin down to use less power. There is no good or bad value for this statistic per se, but I suppose it gives some idea of how heavily the device has been used.

so i tried the diagnostic thing and it didn't really do anything because my ipod won't connect to my computer. its a 5th gen ipod classic and the usb port for it just stopped working. i tried it with many different computers and it won't respond. i tried testing it but everytime i plugged it in, it didn't respond then either. the only thing i can do with it is to charge it with the firewire port but i can't restore it or put anything on it either. please help!!!

In principle flash drives are certainly more robust, though any of these devices are still far from indestructible. You've also got to compare capacity & features against price. I really like all the things my iPhone can do in addition to playing music, but my son just plumped for a new classic for his birthday over the smallest iPod touch.

These are my numbers but they seem wonky I've had this iPod for at least 4 years but it's off. I have dropped it a couple times, but it had a case to protect it. I've had the same trouble with it freezing iTunes and given the error message that "The iPod "my name" cannot be synced. The disk could not be read from or written to." I've only had this problems since I upgraded my software a several months back. I can get a few audiobooks on it and my entire music collection but when I try to add a few new audiobooks it does this.

Is it fried?

It doesn't look too bad, though it has got too hot at some point. Have you tried running a full disk surface check on it? Perhaps there is a small section of unreliable sectors that still need to be identified and mapped out. It may also help to make sure that any AV software you have is configured to ignore your media folders and the iPod. With large audiobook files AV may interfere with the transfer process.

I'm really not tech savy so could you exsplain what you mean?

As for letting it get too hot I left my iPod in the car one day when I was going swiming.

I finally figured out the problem with it (at least for now) I was so fed up I made a copy of my iTunes library and put it on an HD so I could open on my PC (laptop) and tried to sync, it didn't work, even after restoring it to work with PC (it said the songs couldn't be synced becasue the computer need to be authorized, even though it was authroized.) So I went back to my Mac so I would at least have my music and I didn't have a $380 (what I paid years ago for my iPod) paperweight. It synced everything. I have all my audiobooks, my music, the few music vids I hadn't been able to have on it since I first started having issues.
