I take issue with the reference to "stealing apps". I've had my ipad for 1 1/2 years. I've bought apps such as word processing apps, card games, word games, etc. I've allowed my 9-year-old son to use my ipad from time to time. He made purchases such as NBA 2k14, minecraft, baseball games. Needless to say, I do not, nor did I ever play those games. Also needless to say, I paid for all the apps, since my 9-year-old son doesn't have a job. For Christmas, we decided to buy him his own, brand new 32gb ipad air, with option for cellular and extended warranty. $900 later, he has to re-buy the apps I already bought. This is something I previously knew about, but, to come to this page and read that if I think there should be a way to transfer those apps to his Apple ID / ipad, would be looked upon as stealing, is outrageous. Not even looking to "share" the apps within the home, I don't want it. Remove it from my ID and add it to his. Sorry, sir, not stealing. Basically Apple is penalizing me for adding an addition $900 product to my home.

Your son can continue to use the same Apple ID for the App Store on his new device. That way he will still have access to all of the purchased apps.

As with many other tihngs in life, there are a few that spoil what should not be an issue for honest people and those in your particular situation. It was designed to prevent people from stealing apps and the app developers wanting to protect their investment.

You do not have to repurchase apps that were already purchased. There is nothing that prevents someone from installing apps on an iOS device that were purchased/downloaded with diferent Apple IDs. When there is an app update for an app that was downloaded with one particular Apple ID, that Apple ID and password associated with the app must be used to download and install the update.

So, on the new ipad, log in with the Apple ID used to purchase the app. Download the update. I understand. Now my question is this. Obviously , my son would then log out if my Apple ID, and log in with his. Will the app be on his ipad?

He may not need to log in with the Apple ID that was used to download the apps at Settings > iTunes & App Stores.

What is the prompt when trying to download an app update that was downloaded with your Apple ID?

The only thing that causes an app to be deleted from a device is by manually deleting the app, or by selecting uninstall for the app under the Apps tab for the device sync preferences with iTunes followed by a sync.

He can have a separate Apple ID for iMessages/Facetime/iCloud but continue to use the shared one for apps.

Actually, if you have a Mac you should be doing all of this on the Mac and then syncing to the iPads. You can authorize the same Mac to use both the content from your Apple ID and the content from you son's Apple ID. By doing this on the Mac (or PC) you don't run the risk of being locked out of one of the Apple IDs for 90 days on the iPad. Once you have synced the content to the new iPad that is registered with your son's Apple ID, try to use one of the apps/games from your account and the iPad should ask you to authorize the iPad to use your content.

We are having the same problem, as I originally posted. I don't think any of these are solutions. My 15 year old would like his own Apple ID. He has received many itunes gift cards and he doesn't want to share them with his brother who also has a device linked to my id. According to Apple, if he sets up his iphone using a brand new Apple ID and the gift cards, he will lose access to all the songs and apps he bought under my id and will have to purchase them again. This is the problem. Why should I pay again for the songs he already purchased using my id and credit card? I'm not "stealing" anything. Sadly, Apple has not seen the necessity of sub-accounts or family accounts with separate ids.

There are a number of users with more than one Apple ID with content on their iOS device that was purchased/downloaded with more than one Apple ID.

I called the help number for itunes and waited for almost 30 minutes to speak to a person and that is what he told me. Yes, there can be content under different ids, but he will have to keep logging in and out to play different songs and apps purchased under the different ids. Not very practical.

You were told wrong.

He will not have to keep logging in and out with each Apple ID to play different songs and use apps under each Apple ID.

The only reason he would need to do that for songs if he is using iTunes Match - not for songs transferred to the iPhone via the iTunes sync/transfer process and not for songs purchased from the iTunes Store with different IDs.

In order to install an app update that was downloaded with a particular Apple ID, he will need to use that Apple ID and password which I don't believe requires having to login in with that Apple ID at Settings > iTunes & App Store first.
