Locking Cells in "NUMBERS"

I am new to Apple and have followed the instructions for locking spreadsheets and objects from the "Help" function in "Numbers" but the Assign button and the drop down menu are all grey. If I follow the instructions to lock a spreadsheet, nothing happens. Is this my fault? What am I doing wrong?

Simply associate the table you want to lock with another table that has the inputs you want and lock the original table with the code while allowing the uncoded, yet associated table to be written in.

I made a binary calculating device and I wanted to lock the table. I made the original input cell = the new tables cell. I only have the one input, the value of my decimal number. I made the original input's cell, text color, white and placed my new input(table) on top of it.

Hi R'

You cannot lock an individual cell in Number.

The smallest unit that can be locked is a Table. Locking a Table prevents the table from being moved and prevents its contents from being edited.

Locking (or unlocking) a Table is a simple matter of selecting the Table, then going to the Arrange menu and choosing Lock (or choosing Unlock).

Locking a Table is intended to prevent accidental changes to the contents. It will not prevent intentional changes.

Chris,

To lock a Numbers document, go to the Document Inspector and check the box at the bottom of the pane.

This isn't a great idea, in my opinion. I think it's better to create an encrypted Disk Image and keep the sensitive document in that Image. The reports of unrecoverable locked documents have been fairly numerous, whereas I don't recall ever hearing of an encrypted disk image becoming unreadable for any reason other than forgetting the password.

See the documentation on Disk Utility for instructions.

Hi Chris,

Are you asking about password protecting the entire document, or about locking a table or other object in a document to prevent (accidental) changes to that object's contents or position?

Jerry has covered the first possibility, but your use of "objects" in "locking spreadsheets and objects" implies the latter. This doesn't involve an "assign" button.

To lock an object in a document:

Select the object.

Go to the Arrange menu and choose Lock,

Done.

Concerning your subject line: Locking Cells in "NUMBERS"

Only 'objects' can be locked. Individual cells are parts of Tables, and are not in themselves 'objects.' Tables may be locked. Individual cells may not.

The simple answer is: You can't, at least not in the way you can protect Excel cells. A small consolation is that you can lock tables. So, you could create a table for your numeric masterpiece, select the table, and then choose Arrange -> Lock.Your work would be safe until someone chooses to unlock the table.

Another technique recommended in Apple's Discussion Forums is to do your work and then plant a rectangle over the area you don't want changed, select that rectangle, open the Inspector, click the Graphic tab, move the Opacity slider all the way to the left (0%), and choose Arrange -> Lock to lock the shape in place. The work beneath the shape will shine through but no one will be able to muck with it unless they unlock the shape and either move it or send it into the background.
