MacBook - Windows 7: squeaking sound with closed lid

Hello All,

I have a MacBook (alu, late 2008) with Boot Camp (v4.0) and Windows 7 (32bit) installed.

Whenever I close the lid and run on a external display, there is a loud squeaky sound coming from the speakers.

I found out that the sound stops when I lower the volume to about a half or below.

Also it has something to do with the mic being on the top of the lid (next to iSight camera). When the lid is open, there is nothing in fornt of the mic, hence no annoying sound is coming out of the speakers. However, when i close the lid, the mic gets covered with the bottom aluminium case and the speakers start to squeak.

This does not happen in OSX (Lion), only in Windows 7.

Does anyone know how to resolve this ?

That's wierd. It could easily be feedback coming from the mic, since closing the lid connects it, air-channel-wise, with the area the speakers come out of. The mic on this computer is on the main part of the computer, near the keyboard. If you have a 15" or 17", it's hidden behind the left speaker grille. If you have the 13" it's a little dot to the top-left of the keyboard.

When you close the lid in OSX, it seems that it's smart enough to turn off the mic to avoid feedback when you close the lid. This is obviously not happening in Windows, so you'll need to turn it off or mute it manually.

Here are a couple tips from a Windows forum for addressing this:

Goto Recording devices in the Windows Sound Control Panel;

Goto Microphone properties;

Goto Custom Tab;

Check the box that says "Do Not Monitor"

or

Hit Windows key (Command on a Mac)

Type Sound to search

Click Sound

Click how you LISTEN to your sound

Click Properties

Click Levels

Click the Mute Button down next to Microphone

Hope this helps!

This did not resolve the issue, however it did point me the right way.

I have opened up the Realtek HD Audio Manager (which is installed along with all the Boot Camp drivers) and I fiddled a bit with all those settings until I found the right one.

In "Microphone" tab I had to mute the "playback volume".

Now the microphone IS working (is enabled and "listening") and there is no annoyng feedback sound from the speakers.
