I have an issue updating my iPhone to iOS 5.1
I wanted to download the update over the air, I tap on Check for Update and then it's checking for update for long time and at the end there is a communicate "Unable to Check for Update. An error occured while checking for a software update".The same thing is on my iPod touch.
What can I do, if I don't wanna update via iTunes?
I have iOS 5.0.1, don't have jailbreak.
iPhone 4S, iOS 5.0.1
To who did not download software update:-
1st thing: Open iTunes. (on the pc)
2nd thing: click on "check for update ".
3rd thing: A message will show and it says "download and update or download only".
4th thing: I chose download and update and it took 3 hours the first software and 30 minutes for the second software
5th thing: it worked 100% downloading and it wont take thing from capacity.

1. Change DNS Servers
worked fine for me!
Changed the DNS and checked for software updates, at first it seemed as though I was was going to get the error message again but after a min or two, i got the screen to install the udpate ... thanks 🙂
One question remains: why did this work? This is the first time I have not been able to update the software on my iOS devices. I am not able to update via iTunes either, and my Apple TV can not. I'll guess I can change the DNS on that one too. Will try later

The DNS switch wokred for me also, thank you!!!. To me resetting my phone is the very last thing, when all others have failed.
I dont get it. How do you change the DNS? I have been trying for 2 days and it still comes up with the same error. There are loads of boxes, ans that answer is not clear? Is it 8.8.8.8.8.8.9.9 or just 8.8.8.8 ? Is it under DHCP or bootP? I do not get it. All these answers are ********.
Did you try part 2 of the solution? The DNS solution doesn't work for everyone. Don't change anything else on that page. Just follow the instructions exactly.
Don't you think it's quite clear that I can't be bothered backing up to iTunes? The whole point of ios 5 wasPC-free. Obviously that was a load of hot air as in the end I will have to connect to iTunes, backup etc etc BUT I DON'T WANT TO. ICloud is useless as it is only 5GB and wont backup apps.
I just want someone to clarify part one.

Settings/Wi-fi/tap the arrow in the blue circle next to your wifi/DNS - change to 8.8.8.8.
That should be it. Remember the settings so you an set it back later. I don't know how important that is
Nope, still says unable to check for update. The DNs before changing was 192.168.0.1, FYI.
There is no blue arrow next to wifi/DNS... It says under DHCP- DNS as a box.
Also there is no "save" button.
Settings/Wi-fi/tap the arrow in the blue circle next to your wifi name
change the dns under dhcp and bootp. When you back out it will save the changes.
Click forget this network then go back in and join it.
Changing DNS worked on an iPhone:
Settings > Wi-Fi > DNS to 8.8.8.8
Works on on a Mac with iTunes too:
System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS to 8.8.8.8

They recommend other OpenDNS too, but frankly 8.8.8.8 is much easier to remember.
What's going on here? Akamai overloaded by requests? Priortizing Googles DNS maybe?
These solutions are not working for me...any other ideas out there?
