iTunes 10.6 crashing after upgrade

I just upgraded iTunes to 10.6, but it crashes everytime I open it.

I'm under Snow Leopard (10.6.8).

Thanks in advance for any suggestion or solution.

Downloaded the update on Wednesday March 7. Thought that by now, there would be some new update to fix this issue, but there's not.

I can't play any songs at all on my macbook. When I click on the app to open iTunes, it pulls up for ~1 second, and then disappears with a error message shortly following saying, "iTunes quit unexpectedly". Well, no duh.......

It won't let me click on anything during that one second of being up. I tried restarting my computer because I thought that might help and it definitely didn't.

I'm not a fan of having to delete my libraries to start with an older version of iTunes. Although, I may end up having to resort to that because nothing's been fixed so far and I miss my music ):

It's very hard to downgrade since you updated to iTunes 10.6.

In a Apple reseller they solved my problem. (it took arround 1 hour and a half for a 20 GB music library)

  • You have to move your iTunes folder (inside Music folder) to another place (Hard Drive) and create a new library
  • Then import to this new library, dragigng the music folders from the old library (iTunes/iTunes Media/Music)(advice, do it by steps, selecting arround 4 gigas each import and check if doesn't crash)
  • Then iTunes will copy the misic files to the new library (take some time). You have to do the same with your movies, podcasts, etc.
  • Finaly, check if it crashes anymore

It worked for me.

You might lose some album covers in the process, but it is sloved with right click option.

I have just observed that 10.6 on my Macbook plus the new mobile operating system on my iPhone and iPad results in all the crashes we have been experiencing.

I warned my children NOT to upgrade to 10.6, BUT one of them already had. He was running the previous mobile operating system and 10.6 plus previous mobile operating system worked normally without crashing.

Perahps it is an incompability between the new systems. New iTunes plus old mobile OS seems to work. It seems from postings that perhaps Old iTunes and new OS may seem to work.

Don't upgrade....YET.

No, it is very simple.

Took me about 2 minutes.

Delete the iTunes library.itl file in the iTunes folder.

Copy the latest iTunes library.itl file from /iTunes/Previous iTunes libraries/ folder to /iTunes/ and rename it iTunes library.itl.

Delete iTunes 10.6 and reinstall 10.5.3.

Like a number of people here, after upgrading to 10.6 itunes would crash after i tried to sync any device.

I spent over two hours on the phone with an Apple tech adviser and found no solution. After reading Donald MacKenzie's post (and others with same suggestion), I was able to correct the crash issues by upgrading to iPhoto 9.2.2. While I'm really relieved the crash issue is solved, I think Apple should reimbursement users for the purchase price of $15 that was required to do the iPhoto upgrade just to have iTunes 10.6 work properly.

The thing is people are having multiple problems, from crashing to installation problems. It has been stated a few times in this thread that some people aren't even using iPhoto, yet are still having issues with 10.6. Upgrading iPhoto may seem like a fix.....but I would wager that your trouble with 10.6 are not over yet.

I don't even understand why anyone would want to keep doggedly trying to get a very flawed software release to work. It's not worth the headaches when 10.5.3 still works perfectly fine with the new IOS on devices. Eventually, one hopes, Apple will get wise and build this new version over from scratch. It is a mess. Perhaps they are also sourcing software development out to countries with underpaid labourers now. Not impressive st all!

My easy fix was for iTunes crashing on syncing with my iPad2 was upgrade to the new version of iPhoto. Here what I did:

1. upgrade iPhoto (cost me $14.99)

2. let iPhoto upgrade the iPhoto database

3. reset iPad (using the reset under the general setting of the settings icon of the iPad

4. had iTunes search for all the album artwork (iPad not yet connected)

5. connected the iPad and synced it.

I did do a happy dance...

Previously, I had tried rebuilding, rebooting, reinstalling iTunes 10.6, and using TimeMachine but nothing worked to solve the sync problem. I did not try downgrading to the prior iTunes version.

Upgrading to the new software was fairly straightforward. While the cost of iPhoto was inconvenient, it wasn't as bad as loosing my albums or apps.

Hope this helps.

BTW, I am running 10.7.3 on a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (MacBookPro). I have an iPad2 with the latest software updates.

Here's how you solve it, it's an issue with the iTunes Library artwork cache for me:

In your iTunes library folder open the Album Artwork folder and inside delete the Cache folder

example for Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music/iTunes/Album Artwork/Cache/

On restarting iTunes your album art will be re-cached.

This worked for me, can't say for everyone else.

There are multiple and apparently independent iTunes issues being reported here. Each issue must be treated separately as there are different causes. Clearly the overwhelming majority of the literally hundreds of millions of iTunes users are not having any of these problems. I know many folks on Macs who have upgraded with no issues whatsoever. I have visited forums where these issues are still completely unknown. So, if you are having big problems with iTunes, you are an unfortunate member of a large group of unhappy folks, but still very much part of a minority.

I have personal experience with only one of these iTunes bugs. Apparently any iOS devise that is synchronized with photos from their iPhoto 8.1.2 library may have a crash occur whever attempting a sync with such a device. Many people in this thread have experienced that one. This particular bug seems to be completely eliminated if you can remove the sync to this library by any one of a number of ways. Way back on page 8, I posted a very simple way to accomplish this if you are experiencing this particular problem. For some it is a temporary work-around, for others like me who have moved from iPhoto to Aperture and have no further need of iPhoto, this is a complete cure. My heavily used iTunes is now running perfectly. It is as solid as it has ever been.

Other bugs related to iTunes library corruption, album artworks, or whatever are another matter entirely for which I can offer no help. There may be multiple different causes for these crashes. Keep in mind that anyone who updates iTunes to 10.6 and experiences crashing will likely end up on this forum thread, so it feels like iTunes 10.6 is one big mess. That cannot explain why millions of people including me at this point are not having any problems with 10.6.

If you only experience iTunes crashes during device syncs with photos, you can get past this bug and move on.

Everyone else, unfortunately, needs to either wait for a bug fix from Apple that hopefully addresses your particular situation or try to diagnose the problem yourself. Try holding the option key down while starting iTunes and then creating a new empty iTunes library. Drag some music into it and see if it still crashes. If it doesn't you at least know there is something in your library that is making 10.6 crash. Some of the other methods posted here may work for you. If you can't solve it, hopefully you have Time Machine, or some other backup to enable you to restore the previous version. Take the time to post a bug report to Apple. Instructions for doing that are posted elsewhere in this thread. If everyone with iTunes 10.6 problems does this, it will have a better chance of getting some attention soon.
