iTunes 10.6 crashing after upgrade

I just upgraded iTunes to 10.6, but it crashes everytime I open it.

I'm under Snow Leopard (10.6.8).

Thanks in advance for any suggestion or solution.

Hey There,

Here is the Fix for the iTunes 10.6 Crash.

Here’s the fix to stop iTunes 10.6 crashing on Mac OS:

  1. Quit iTunes (if it hasn’t already quit itself)
  2. Go to /Applications/ and click iTunes.app
  3. Press command + I to get info
  4. Edit the permissions so everyone has read/write access
  5. Move iTunes 10.6 to the trash
  6. Go to ~/Music/iTunes (or wherever your iTunes library is stored)
  7. Copy iTunes Library.itl to your desktop to be safe (delete it when you finish the process, this is your 10.6 library which you may still want if you can’t fix iTunes after this)
  8. Go to ~/Music/iTunes/Previous iTunes Libraries/ and copy the file that was created closest to today (in my case, it was one from about an hour before I installed 10.6); the old library you’re copying is your iTunes 10.5.3 library
  9. Paste it in ~/Music/iTunes
  10. Rename the file to iTunes Library.itl
  11. Go to ~/Library/Preferences and delete everything that starts with com.apple.iTunes
  12. Download the iTunes 10.5.3 disk image (Link Edited by Host)
  13. Install iTunes 10.5.3; it should load the older library you just copied to your iTunes folder
  14. Open iTunes
  15. Play a victory song and wait for 10.6.1 so you don’t have to do this again

I did this and it fixed my problem. Hope this helps

My itunes 10.6 crashes instantly upon launch, but the odd time it will launch and fully function? Tried so many things from deleting itunes and reinstalling using time machine to retrieve files, deleting com.apple.itunes plst files in preferences folder.Tried safe mode, didn't work. I reinstalled a few times and it would get up and running and work fine, but once I close itunes it would crash instantly again when trying to open again.I read here about possible iphoto issue but i have 9.2.2 running. Someone suggested it was an album artwork issue so I moved that folder to desktop and itunes launched and worked fine but missing a few covers. But, again close it,and it wouldn't reopen.I created another library(option key when clicking itunes icon) and ripped 1 c.d. and that library always opens but switch over to the (newly installed) old library and it always crashes. That last point I can't get my head around, how can one library be fine and the other with only 8 gigs of music(b.t.w.) always crash? Is it an artwork issue? I wonder if importing the other failing library to the solid one keep it working properly? Anyways sounds like the answer is to go back to previous version of itunes for now.I havn't done it yet.

I found this and it worked perfectly:

Another recommended solution to fix and stop crashing of iTunes 10.6 on Mac comes from another Apple Forum member:

I was another one with the iPhoto 8.1.2 and iTunes 10.6 crashing when syncing with my iPad at stage 6 (syncing photos). I am using Aperture, so I did not want to buy an iPhoto upgrade. I found a very easy solution. Hold down the option key while starting up iPhoto. You will be asked to choose a Library, or you can create a new Library. So just select “Create New…” and make a new empty library.

Now quit iPhoto and then restart again holding <option> to be sure the new empty library is selected. Next time you start up iTunes and begin syncing, it will get to step 6 it will stop and tell you the Library with your synced photos is missing. Tell iTunes not to sync the photos and let the sync finish. Voila no crashing!

Now go into the photos sync options for the device (in my case it was my iPad) and be sure photo syncing is turned off. When you open iPhoto again, hold <option> and re-select your original Library. All is now back to normal, except you may need to leave photo syncing turned off until Apple gets this fixed.

iTunes 10.6 kept crashing on me anytime I went into the Movies folder. It didn't matter if I was syncing, browsing or what, it just crashed in that folder. This thing is irritating. Although not elegant in the least, what I did was just change the view in the Movies folder from icons to movie flow. I have no idea why it worked but it seems okay for now. Hope this helps someone...

Wow! switched from grid showing album artwork to song list and itunes 10.6 opens everytime (i'm on snow leopard 10.6.8) Thank you parari. I did try removing the artwork folder but it didn't work for me. Still from my last post, I created that new library with 1 album in it on cover view and it opens always ? The key to switching views is itunes has to by chance open first. I guess I'm stubborn enough to hit reopen 40 times.

I have had the problem of itunes crashing after upgrading to 10.6 but only when in grid mode. I dont have a time machine backup to go back unfortunatly. I seem to have issues when plugging in my iphone or syncing, randomly I have noticed that when dragging and dropping music on to the phone nothing will happen. Randomly if i try again, it might work both when connected via USB and with Wi-Fi Sync. Also the phone seems to mount and unmount by itself in the itunes window as well and it would only copy certain album covers for albums when it did succesfully do a copy.

I fixed the grid mode issue by scaling the size of the folders down to the lowest setting, it was at the largest setting. (I have a few seconds in grid mode before it crashes to do this) and it seems to have solved it, So for anyone out there that has the grid mode crash issue, maybe try that! As a side note, I have been able to increase the folder size to about 55% (ish) on the slider but after that it crashes striaght away!

My issues dont seem to be as bad as some on here but there seems to be so many varying issues with this update, its unbelievable really!

I think for anyone who has spent the money required to buy an apple product that the last thing we should have to worry about is apple breaking itunes. This version is truly broken!

Deleting the album artwork folder SEEMED to make things better in grid view fo me. Over 1000 album art missing out of 5300 albums, though.

However, increasing the artwork size with the slider past about 55% made it crash again.

So, I replaced the old album artwork folders and.......artwork still missing. I do not recommend this method as I have over 1000 albums to fix now.

I'll run iTunes 'Get album artwork' to see how many can be fixed automatically.
