iTunes 10.6 crashing after upgrade

I just upgraded iTunes to 10.6, but it crashes everytime I open it.

I'm under Snow Leopard (10.6.8).

Thanks in advance for any suggestion or solution.

Thank you to whoever posted this! It worked and itunes 10.6 is gone. The link to itunes 10.5.3 can be found on the page to download itunes 10.6. The only thing is that it restores your library to the most recent previously updated library. Anything after that date will have to be reimported in the case of cds or downloaded once more. But it worked for me. Here's to no more crashes at launch! Thank you!

  1. 1. Quit iTunes (if it hasn't already quit itself)
  2. Go to /Applications/ and click iTunes.app
  3. Press command + I to get info
  4. Edit the permissions so everyone has read/write access
  5. Move iTunes 10.6 to the trash
  6. Go to ~/Music/iTunes (or wherever your iTunes library is stored)
  7. Copy iTunes Library.itl to your desktop to be safe (delete it when you finish the process, this is your 10.6 library which you may still want if you can't fix iTunes after this)
  8. Go to ~/Music/iTunes/Previous iTunes Libraries/ and copy the file that was created closest to today (in my case, it was one from about an hour before I installed 10.6); the old library you're copying is your iTunes 10.5.3 library
  9. Paste it in ~/Music/iTunes
  10. Rename the file to iTunes Library.itl
  11. Go to ~/Library/Preferences and delete everything that starts with com.apple.iTunes
  12. Download the iTunes 10.5.3 disk image from *****
  13. Install iTunes 10.5.3; it should load the older library you just copied to your iTunes folder
  14. Open iTunes
  15. Play a victory song and wait for 10.6.1 so you don't have to do this again

March 27, 2012, just got off the phone with apple. There is a known issue with Itunes 10.6 and Iphoto. iPhoto pre- iPhoto 11 causes immediate crash to Itunes 10.6 every time. The quickest fix is to purchase iPhoto 11 for 14.99 and all is well. Do this before you screw up your entire library and lock out your iPad and iPod. There is another fix that is temporary that will get you through until the patch comes out but it's involved and temporary and requires some reversion when the patch comes out.

I bought iPhoto 11 and all is well. But not before I restored my system from time machine, restored Lion, and reverted to an older iTunes library, all of which whacked out my original pre-iTunes 10.6 install. I'm slowly rebuilding.

Apple really need to post this info when they know its a problem. I wasted two days and lost my original config for iTunes. I'll never get it back the way I had it now.

Then I would assume apple knows only so much as to why this dog crashes continually. I will be monitoring my recovery and posting updates. It seems to be holding after a couple hours now.

The truth is they probably don't have much of a clue what this release is doing to other programs on mac platforms. They do know that the iPhoto upgrade works but that seems to be a symptom and not a root cause.

I hate to be the first one to say it: This crappy release would not have happened if Steve Jobs was still alive. Lots of post passing comments on Jobs whined that he could be a real ***tard with people who, in his mind, under performed. However, if there is no Walt Disney or Sam Walton peeking into offices and checking with customers he knows...the quality goes downhill pretty fast. If you're the boss, you gotta "walk the floor" and let everyone know you're paying attention.

Just MHO, YMMV.

Just a semi off topic FYI, but while the iPhoto upgrade worked for me, I really hate the new iPhoto. For example, you used to be able to simply hit escape when viewing a photo at full size and it would take you back to the album. Now, it simply doesn't work. What does? Who knows. I hope that Lion you tube guy hasn't seen this yet - he will probably go on another rant.

It seems to be changed around for no other reason than someone was bored with the way the furniture was arranged. I have yet to find any improvements in the iPhoto experience.

I tried to use the approach in KayLZee's post of March 17 but when I got to step 21 all my con.apple.itunes files were missing. Here is is a variation on that approach that worked for me.

  1. Copy iTunes Library.itl to your desktop to be safe (delete it when you finish the process, this is your 10.6 library which you may still want if you can't fix iTunes after this)
  2. Go to ~/Music/iTunes/Previous iTunes Libraries/ and copy the file that was created closest to today.
  3. Paste it in ~/Music/iTunes
  4. Rename the file to iTunes Library.itl
  5. reboot Lion 10.7.3 with the command and R keys depressed.
  6. From the menu choose RE-INSTALL Lion 10.7.3 and follow the prompts. This will load in iTunes 10.5.1
  7. When Lion starts up (about 2 hours with a fast internet). When Lion asks DO NOT update anything!
  8. Go to ~/Library/Preferences and delete everything that starts with com.apple.iTunes. In my case there was nothing that started con.apple.iTunes
  9. Download the iTunes 10.5.3 disk image. Use Google if you have trouble finding it.
  10. Install iTunes 10.5.3; it should load the older library you just copied to your iTunes folder
  11. Open iTunes
  12. Play a victory song and wait for 10.6.1 so you don't have to do this again
  13. After down load the Java file as requested by the system so other parts of your system will work.

Good Luck

No, with Steve Jobs running things we had more than one OS update that caused some people to lose data on external hard drives, and many other issues that affected far more people than this one. Things aren't worse, they aren't better, pretty much the same number of bugs that I've seen over the years.
