Happened to me for all portrait photos in a journal that I previously cropped (even though the cropping maintains the original aspect ratio) - uncropt portrait photos in the journal look fine. The distortion occurs at all levels of the journal (the "thumbnails" in the overview page as well as for each individual cropped photo) both on the iphone in iphoto as well as on the linked page in safari on the iphone or an imac, for example. When the journal is being updated after an edit, iphoto renders the thumbnails on the overview page on the iphone in what seems to be the proper aspect ratios and with black borders, but once this journal update is complete, the black borders disappear and the distortions in the cropped photos reoccur.

Any ideas? Bug/feature?

I'm not Apple Support! If this is still a problem for you, I won't bother verifying this on my own iphone and I'll take my chances and go by what you reported.

Honestly, I won't bother with iPhoto on iphone anymore - generating journals has turned out to be a waste of time for me. Also I've discovered that I can take way better photos with my cheap, small point and shoot camera. As far as I'm concerned, iPhoto on iphone is a "write off" for me.

In summary, I find that many functions that the iphone provides really require a significantly bigger screen to do the work effectively - unfortunately iphone 5 does not fix that for me. The ipad is a different story.

My portrait photos are stretched to landscape.
