Nikon D800 camera and Aperture 3

I am considering Nikon D800 camera and am concerned if I will have any trouble using Aperture 3.1.3. (installed on Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.8 with 2GHz Intel Corei7 processor and 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3)

Aperture 3, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Nikon D800

Apple tends to be slow supporting new cameras, even top pro cameras like the Nikon D800 and the D4. They are not yet supported:

Alternatives while we wait for Apple to add Nikon D4 and D800 support include:

• Adobe's RAW converter now or very soon will convert the Nikon NEF files into DNG files Aperture can use.

• Nikon NX2 usually does the best job of converting NEFs (but without Aperture's elegant workflow).

Nikon keeps each camera's RAW conversion algorithms proprietary, so firms like Apple and Adobe have to sort of reverse-engineer for each new camera.

When Apple finishes the work needed to support the new Nikons they will issue a Software Update.

Horepower is also an issue because the D800 files will be huge when shooting at the full 36 MP RAW setting. For sure you want to upgrade to 8 GB RAM, and use a Referenced-Masters workflow with Masters on external drives (or add a large hard drive in place of the MBP optical drive).

Another great link! I particularly noted: "Use the optimum aperture. Apertures above about f/11 introduce diffraction and effectively act as an unintentional AA filter" and "When shooting hand-held use lenses with VR when possible, and also a high shutter speed... 2 or 3 over the reciprocal of the focal length, not the 1/focal length of olden days". The first provides some validation of my thought that if your technique has typically used higher stops, it will hard to realize the benefit of the "e". But a change of technique may provide the payoff.

Nikon, with the 14-24, says the optimum is f/8, above which definition will be lost to diffraction. Says different for every lens, but I have not seen any listing recommendations for each lens.

No, Aperture 3.3.1 on a Macbook Pro with the specs you've listed will work. Furthurmore, D800 files (NEF, compressed - or otherwise will work too). I still use a Macbook dual core 2 GHz/4 GB. Thus far, the only thing that does not work are HD videos from the D800 (HQ, 24fps, 1080P). I can view these outside of Aperture... just NOT with Aperture.
