More filtering problems

Greetings,

Yesterday, I posted a problem with finding an invisible filter. Many thanks to those who helped.

Today, I have another filter problem. While searching, I noticed the same problem I had with an invisible filter, but this time when I implement the fix (i.e., open a filter HUD for a smart album, then click on the Photos item in the library) there is not an invisible filter, but rather the filter HUD contains the following line: "Source: Library Library."

The searching appears to be normal when one of the "Library" fields is selected, but it may or may not be normal when the other "Library" is selected. The odd thing is that, when I search my hard drive, there is only one Aperture Library.

One of the strengths of Aperture is the library functions, but I'm rapidly losing my trust in search results.

Anyone know how to control the Library field?

Many thanks,

Rick

The "Source: Library Library" line is the same as you show, but I also get the double library when filtering rules are being used.

I tried opening the HUD of different smart albums to see if that made a difference. If the smart album filter HUD that I open is one of the "Library Albums," that Filter HUD displays "Source: Library," and when I click on the Photos item, that Filter HUD displays "Source: Library Library." If the smart album filter HUD that I open is for one of my projects, that Filter HUD displays "Source: Library {Project name}," and when I click on the Photos item, that Filter HUD displays "Source: Library Library."

I'm having trouble re-creating the problem that initiated this query, but I'm still not getting expected results with searching. If I open a filter HUD for a smart album, then click on the Photos item in the library, there are no invisible filters being applied. The only filter checked is Rating, and when the rating is greater than or equal to "unrated," all of the photos are present. So far, so good.

However, if I go through the process of checking for an invisible filter (i.e., open a filter HUD for a smart album, then click on the Photos item in the library), and then add a text filter criteria to the open HUD, say the street name, "CeletnĂĄ," Aperture correctly finds 32 items. If I go through the process of checking for an invisible filter, close the open HUD, and then enter CeletnĂĄ in the search box in the upper right corner of the brower, Aperture only finds 9 items. Similarly, if I go through the process of checking for an invisible filter, close the open HUD, and then re-open the HUD by clicking on the icon in the upper right corner of the brower and entering CeletnĂĄ into the text filter, Aperture finds 9 items.

I hope this is clear. Any ideas?

I think the goal right now should be to reset your Library. (Added: I'm using the non-showing of the source line at the top of the Photo View filter as my index of normality. When you click on "Photos" and then bring up the Filter HUD, there should not be a source line at the top of the HUD. Additionally, the filter should work properly.)

Have you closed and re-opened your Library since removing the hidden filter?

Have you run Repair Library?

Since we don't know anything about the maneuver to remove the hidden filter except that it works, I strongly suggest not using it repeatedly or willy-nilly. In particularly, there is no reason to check for the existence of a hidden filter unless you are seeing the results of one.

Can you "unset" an existing hidden filter now? If so, I suggest that you do it, then close Aperture and run "Repair Library". Then open your Library and filter Photos to see if has been returned to normal (do not try to find a hidden filter by using the hidden filter removal maneuver). Directions for running Repair Library are here.

(Small additional point: for trouble-shooting, leave accented characters out of the mix -- and I also suggest not using the Text Rule for trouble-shooting as it is much more complex than Rules such as Color Label and Rating.

The opening of a smart filter and then switching to the photos icon is a trouble shooting/bug fixing technique. It is not meant for dally consumption.

What you see or don't see in the fitter is irrelevant the procedure is meant to fix a specific problem.

In normal smart album filters you will see the chain of image holding containers up to the main library. The scope of the search for that filer will be determined by the (not very visible) selected container.

😼 If that is the index of normality, then I am having a big problem: all my libraries show this source line in the smart settings of the Photos View, even brand new libraries in a brand new user account. I rebuilt two small libraries, no change.

@Frank: could that be a difference between SL and Lion?

I think we're talking about different things and getting confused.

I think kirby is refering to filters on the browser, they don't have a Source:. Filters on Smart albums do have a Source:

At the very top of a browser filteryou will see the location of the browser Photos, Flagged, etc

In a smart album filter you get the smart album name at the top and a source line two lines down.

Anyway that's how I read it. 😕

Yes. Two different ways of bringing up the Filter HUD, and each brings up a slightly different Filter HUD. The Smart Album settings Filter HUD includes a line at near the top, "Sources". The Browser Filter HUD does not have this line.

On my 10.6.8 machine, the Browser Filter HUD never has a sources line (regardless of container). The Smart Album settings Filter HUD always has a sources line.

I think I may have introduced this confusion into this thread. Sorry 😊 . I (mis)understood the OP as seeing the Smart-Album-type Filter HUD when s/he clicked the icon to bring up the Browser Filter HUD. My bad.

Thanks everyone for all the input. I've re-set the library, but that didn't seem to make a difference.

I also tried a more specific criteria than the text field--i.e., I searched using the IPTC (Image Location) instead of Text and the result appears to be correct. My understanding is that the text criteria should find text regardless of which field it's in, but maybe that's not correct.

This is really frustrating-it doesn't seem that searching the database should be so difficult/uncertain.

Thanks again,

Rick
