iphone 4s could not activate mobile data network after update to ios 5.1

after updating ios to latest version (5.1) last night i have noticed today the following:

trying to connect to mail / app store / safari via 3g generates the message 'could not activate mobile data network'

after checking settings 'enable 3g' is set to on; 'mobile data' is set to on and although i do not have a strong 3g signal the phone connected to these apps before the update.

help required

Do this

Just reset network settings under Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings

I found that mobile data stopped working on my iPad once upgraded to IOS 5.1. I have resolved the problem by re-applying the settings in Settings > Cellular Data > APN Settings which had (very bizarrely) been over-written as a result of the upgrade process.

Clearly your APN settings will be specific to your data plan, but if you contact your contract provider, they should be able to tell you what they are.
