Apple TV running 5.0, optical out not working, no sound

I just updated my apple tv to 5.0, hooked it up to my projector (HDMI) and to my Cambridge Audio Azur 640R for audio (optical cable). Unfortunately, no sound comming from the apple tv. Red light shines through the cable, already did a factory reset on the apple tv, played around with the audio settings on the apple tv, restarting it every time... no sound... and the receiver is set to recieve digital audio (tested it using another device to make sure).

any suggestions?

Well, I got my ATV3 couple days ago. The ATV3 connects to TV using HDMI and connects to Yamaha AV receiver using optical cable. At the same time, the TV connects Yamaha using another optical. All the combinations work so far. The Audio & Video setting goes to ON. All others are default.

When streaming movie with AC3 audio from itune to ATV3, I got DD5.1 from Yamaha but no sound from TV speaker. When streaming AAC two channels from itune to ATV3, I got two channels either from yamaha via optical from ATV3, or two channels from TV speakers via HDMI, or even two channels PCM from Yamaha via the second optical back from TV.

I ran into a similar problem and was able to fix it this way:

My ATV2 was plugged to my TV via HDMI..and optical out to my sound bar. While playing some music I disconnected the HDMI from the back of the ATV2 and the audio dignal started passing through the optical. After plugging the HDMI back I got audio ten from both. I just went into the TV menu at that point and muted it.

Voilia!

Problem solved:

1. Update to 5.0.2

2. The plastic caps shielding both ends of the optical cable have definitely to be removed

Setup: iPhone via AirPlay - ATV2 - via Optical Cable to Bose Media Center III.

Media Center is connected to Panasonic TV via HDMI. TV can be switched off, music stays on.

In Bose Media Center setup Optical Source is set to AUX.

I have this problem, it just stopped working one day. I have the Apple TV 2 just to play music on - no TV, use a DAC converter to a really cheap amp I got from eBay designed for use on boats and motorbikes (it's a bookshelf setup in my kitchen). I also have an ATV 2 in the living room so I could do a bit of swapping out.

I took the kitchen ATV into the living room, swapped it all out and it worked.

Took the DAC in and ran the optical cable from the living room ATV into it and then on to my AV reciever. Sound came out so I assumed it was the amp at fault, no big surprise as it litterally cost me £9.99. Then I noticed on the DAC there is an LED light that indicates whether it is 'locked' or not. It was on in the living room. I set everything back up in the kitchen, the LED was off at first then after about 5 minutes it came on and I can play music again. So I now suspect a dodgy optical cable or socket on the ATV or DAC.

Here's what worked for me

Settings > audio & video > hdmi output > RGB low

Settings > audio & video > tv resolution > 720p HD - 60Hz

Settings > audio & video > audio output > auto

Settings > audio & video > Dolby digital > on

Settings > audio & video > audio language > English

I think the point is to turn off as many automatic settings as possible. Set the tv resolution as high as your tv will support, mine only goes to 720p 60Hz

Your mileage may vary

Okay, I know I am behind the curve but still hoping for some help. Same issue as described here, no sound out of the optical port. I tried most everything that everyone else has tried. I have spent lots of time with the apple engineers, and my system guys as well. I get sound and video through the HDMI port fine through my AV-Express QG 5000 5.1 Surround Sound System. I am not getting any sound signal through the optical port at all on my downstairs system. Upstairs I have a different surround sound system but when I plug in the optical cord, I get sound perfectly from the system. I just tried something else; I hooked up my downstairs Blue Ray player directly to my amplifier, no signal. That seems to blame my surround sound system rather than the ATV.

Any other thoughts before I call my surround sound guy and ask them to check this out or give me another way to test the optical port.

Just wanted to get my 2 cents in…

This is my setup:

· Samsung HDTV

· Sony Media system w/ DVD player built in.

· Apple TV2

· Xbox 360

· Directv

The Apple TV2, Xbox 360 and Directv are all connected directly to the TV via HDMI cable. I then have the Sony Media System connected to the TV via optical audio. This allows all video through the TV and all audio through Sony Media System just fine… Except for my Apple TV2. The Apple TV2 plays picture plays perfectly, but the audio cuts out every minute or so for about 3 seconds. I have verified that this issue is not being caused by my Macbook Pro nor my iPhone as they stream perfect audio and video.

Can you guys give any insight to my issue?

Thanks!

Similar setup but different result,

Vizio Razer LED LCD

Vizio VSB-200 Sound bar

APPLE TV2-hdmi to TV

Phillips optical audio cable from TV Audio OUT to Soundbar.

when I play Netflix or Itunes from Apple TV, thru the TV, to the sound bar, I get this really chattery sound.

but if i mute the sound bar and turn the volume on the TV up, it plays normally.

Any idea anyone?
