It's a DNS issue. I think Apple's servers are being hammered and some IP addresses do better than others. So you need to temporarily change your IP address by editing the DNS. If you are on Mac OS X then ...

(NB: always save and make a full backup before changing anything!!!)

1. open system preferences

2. go to network

3. go to wifi or ethernet (however you are connecting to the internet)

4. go to the DNS tab

5. make a note of your current DNS so you can add it back again in case you lose it

6. click the + to add a DNS

7. add 8.8.8.8 (this is a Google DNS which should be higher priority)

8. be sure to apply

9. be sure to close the system preferences window

10. try to get the update again through iTunes

This worked for me.

If you are on Windows or any other OS then just look up how to add a DNS to your host file.

I have been struggling with this issue since Saturday when trying to update to the new 5.1 software. My family has two ipads and both cannot seem to connect to the update server. I even took my ipad to another site and tried to use a different wifi to see if my internet provider was the problem. It cannot connect as well when connected to itunes. This has to be a apple issue or some bug with the software update program. I was hoping to find out a solution on the forum. At least other folks are having the same issue. I even called tech support. The staff member could not give me an answer. He suggested I try back in a few days in case the server is overloaded. It has been several days and still cannot get connected. Message states " The network connection could not be established" ..

Any ideas.....?

Just found some very clear instructions with a google search.

On the ipad go to settings/Wi-Fi/Tap the blue arrow of your connected network

Under the DNS settings, delete everything and type 8.8.8.8. ( Google Public DNS)

Next go to Settings / Software update

You should now be able to download and install the update.
