How add a canvas background to photos?

Is it possible to put a square white "canvas" backdrop behind my photos when re-sizing into squares & optimizing them for my website? I'd like a nice clean even background. I use iPhoto 09. Perhaps I need to upgrade to another version of iPhoto, or Aperture, to do this?

Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Neither Aperture or iPhoto will do this. You'll need an editor for the job.

In order of price here are some suggestions:

Seashore (free)

The Gimp (free)

Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)

Acorn ($50 approx)

Pixelmator ($50 approx)

Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)

There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

Terrence, I feel like I'm slowly getting to where I need to be. Thank you. I purchased Elements from the App store a couple of weeks ago, but have been unable to get support (long story, but you can see my nasty review in the App store!). So then, I could just select Elements as my external editor for a specific photo (or collection), do the editing, then save them back to iPhoto for exporting. Or, when I figure out how to do it, export directly from Elements to my desktop then on to the site. Do you recommend duplicating the images in iPhoto before editing them in Elements, just in case the originals get lost?
