MacBook Pro Screen (LCD v LED)

Hey,

I bought a MacBook Pro in August 2011 (15 inch 2.0 Ghz, Quad Core i7 with Anti-glare Widescreen option.) - the Apple store lists MacBook Pros (15 and 17 inch models) to have an LED backlit screen, however, when I check the display information in About This Mac section - it states that my notebook has an LCD screen. I opted for the Anti-glare widescreen option, not sure if this option affects the type of screen (LCD v LED). But my question is, shoud I have gotten an LED screen or not? Also, if not, then does anyone know when Apple switched to providing LED screens as a default option for the 15 and 17 inch mid 2011 MacBook Pro models.

Appreciate any information.

Not quite. Check

It reads, "LED-backlit". That tiny hyphen makes all the difference. An "LED backlit display" is a display made of LEDs with an unspecified backlight. An "LED-backlit display" is a display whose backlight is provided by LEDs. The display is an LCD display. But to view such a display, a source of light behind the display is required. In the MBP, the light source is an array of LEDs.

The actual screen that forms the image you see is an LCD screen. Has been for years, and likely will still be for years. The "LED" bit is all about the backlight that enables you to actually see the pixels.

Prior to LED-backlit displays, the backlight was a cold cathode lamp, much like a flourescent lamp in your office or home. Cold Cathode lamps have a few problems: 1) they are not as "green" as everyone wants them to be, mostly due to slight amounts of mercury that is in them. 2) because it is a glass tube, the displays cannot be made as thin as Apple wants them. The MacBook Air, MacBook Pro w/Retina display and the coming iMacs wouldn't be nearly as thin without the LED backlight.
