Replace your 720p HD Movies with 1080p?

Maybe I have Great News? I Have about 125 HD movies, half my collection. I Noticed now when puchasing HD content in the fine print info, on the left under the Movie Cover in Movies section of the iTunes Store, It says downloading in 720P and some of the newer movies say that, and then, a comma, 720p, 1080p.

Then I noticed that In the newest iTunes (10.6), in the Prefs, there are 2 places were it asks for your Preferred Resolution! In the 'Playback' section, and Also in the 'Store' section of the prefs. They were set to 720p of course as thats how things Were. But with the New ATV able to push out 1080p You would want your downloads in the 1080p format. By resetting your prefs in those 2 sections of iTunes to 1080p, instaed of 720p, by pressing the 720p and setting your Preferred Resolution to 1080p, when you go to the Movie Store in iTunes, It now says the D/L will be in 1080p!

Here is were it gets pretty fantastic!!! With the New Breakthrough in the Cloud, that is allowing you to Re Dowload most of your Movies (most because a few Studios are not yet on Board) If you erase your 720p issue, when you re dowload the same item, I Believe you would now get the 1080p copy!!!! They are nearly the same size as Apple is using a New compression format that magically has a better picture with no appreciable size increase!

So IF your Ordering the New 'Apple TV', you could get the Higher resolution copy for your new device. Great Going Apple!!!

I don't yet have my New ATV and have not tried this New Neat Service. If it's true, it seems like a Great Christmas gift from Apple!!! But I have several Pre-Orders on call so I went to my account and Were it says 'Manage Your Pre-Orders' cliked on the Pre-Order, Meloncholia, it took me to the page in the Store were the Movie is being sold, when I looked at the Movie there, 720p,1080p, It had the 1080p copy of the movie set to D/L! ... I had pre-Ordered the movie some time before 1080p was available, and it was shown already in my cue at 1080p!!! You must have the iTunes Prefs set up correctly, for this to occur. So I didn't have to cancel the Order in the Pre-Order section and re-buy the movie to get the High Rez item!

So I do believe that IF the movie that you already own at 720p, is indeed available in the Higher Rez Version - check before trying this, by re-looking up the Movie in the iTunes Store, and, seeing if the info in the small print, now says the HD is also available in 720p/1080p. If your Prefs are set for 1080p in the iTunes app you will get the high rez version!!! Older movies like Dune are not available in Higher Rez, yet?. Next week the new Apple TV comes out and probably in time all movies will be available in 720 &1080p

Too Cool for words! Somebody please test this and let us all know if indeed this is True!!!?

Greetings Joe,

Thanks for the update. I'm one of those folks thats just blown away by the Hi-rez evolution and have been slowly building up a library of movies and tv shows both with Blu-rays and now digital versions that will reside in my home server as part of my iTunes library

Regards,

Philip S.

In Purchased Items,We need a Show/Hide Button to show any Resolution from 720 to 1080p, so we may see exactly what is D/Led, and what we may have missed, or need, we don't have. At any resolution Offered from what we purchased and Deleted to save space on Drives. I have deleted all but the 1080p copies. Have I missed any 1080p from my Library I need? iTunes should be able to show this information. Select the 1080p choice and any purchase that has not been D/Led in the selected Resolution will show up in the Purchased window. *(only the resolution's selected). This would be a GREAT help.

Also in Search we should be able to search by Resolution and Time (duaration of film)

You know that movies are never 16:9 (and Apple products like the iPad have significantly more height further scewing the movie's original ratio). I imagine that most screens are still letterbox when it comes to major motion pictures, irregardless of your screen or tv's shape. I think this is the sort of thing that helps keep down the size of the flick.

Shame television programs aren't 1080p. I imagine the data would double at leasst.

Some TV shows are available in 1080p. Battlestar Galactica, The Pacific and Band of Brothers are 3 examples.

Sweet deal, I love those shows. But they seem more like the exception. I want Mad Men in 1080p! Shame my MacBook Air can't take full advantage. Is there any definitive list of 1080p TV shows?

Out of 125 Available 1080p movies, from 280 total, several of the 1080p's are actually smaller, and a few, Super 8, comes to mind actually are worse in the new 1080p addition, with Blooms and fuzzies... Most all look Great. Between TV and Movies a Terrabyte of D/ling, well all done now, ALso I recoverted over 25GB of space just keeping the 1080p file copied.

How to re-download your previous iTunes purchases at a different quality

Download previous iTunes Store purchases to an authorized computer

  1. Click iTunes Store near the top of the iTunes window.
  2. Click the Purchased link at the right of the iTunes Store homepage (below Quick Links).
  3. In the page that appears, select a category.iTunes shows you which of your purchases are available for download. You can view all of your past purchases, or just the ones not currently in your iTunes library. Items already in your library aren’t available for download. If you select Music, you can view your purchases by song, artist, or album. If you’re viewing by album, click an album to see which songs on it are available for downloading. To search for an item, type its name or a keyword in the search field, and then press the Return key to view your search results.
  4. To download an item, click its Download button User uploaded file.To download all available items, click Download All.

You can also download previously purchased music, movies, and TV shows by clicking the Download button next to an item in your iTunes library.

To hide previous purchases you haven’t downloaded yet, choose View > Hide Music in the Cloud. This also hides any iTunes Match songs you haven’t downloaded.

I found a way in iTunes to download them in 1080p before you make the changes to the Preferences in iTunes settings.

Once in iTunes Store and you have the movie you would like to purchase on the screen. On the details page, you can scroll down to where the "Run Time" and "Format" are located and it should have a link to download the movie in 1080p if available.

So now I have to go back and check the 20 movies I have in 720p for the 1080p download link. The only reason I found the link is because the customer service rep I talked with on the phone actually took the time to find it herself and help me resolve the issue.
