Replace your 720p HD Movies with 1080p?

Maybe I have Great News? I Have about 125 HD movies, half my collection. I Noticed now when puchasing HD content in the fine print info, on the left under the Movie Cover in Movies section of the iTunes Store, It says downloading in 720P and some of the newer movies say that, and then, a comma, 720p, 1080p.

Then I noticed that In the newest iTunes (10.6), in the Prefs, there are 2 places were it asks for your Preferred Resolution! In the 'Playback' section, and Also in the 'Store' section of the prefs. They were set to 720p of course as thats how things Were. But with the New ATV able to push out 1080p You would want your downloads in the 1080p format. By resetting your prefs in those 2 sections of iTunes to 1080p, instaed of 720p, by pressing the 720p and setting your Preferred Resolution to 1080p, when you go to the Movie Store in iTunes, It now says the D/L will be in 1080p!

Here is were it gets pretty fantastic!!! With the New Breakthrough in the Cloud, that is allowing you to Re Dowload most of your Movies (most because a few Studios are not yet on Board) If you erase your 720p issue, when you re dowload the same item, I Believe you would now get the 1080p copy!!!! They are nearly the same size as Apple is using a New compression format that magically has a better picture with no appreciable size increase!

So IF your Ordering the New 'Apple TV', you could get the Higher resolution copy for your new device. Great Going Apple!!!

I don't yet have my New ATV and have not tried this New Neat Service. If it's true, it seems like a Great Christmas gift from Apple!!! But I have several Pre-Orders on call so I went to my account and Were it says 'Manage Your Pre-Orders' cliked on the Pre-Order, Meloncholia, it took me to the page in the Store were the Movie is being sold, when I looked at the Movie there, 720p,1080p, It had the 1080p copy of the movie set to D/L! ... I had pre-Ordered the movie some time before 1080p was available, and it was shown already in my cue at 1080p!!! You must have the iTunes Prefs set up correctly, for this to occur. So I didn't have to cancel the Order in the Pre-Order section and re-buy the movie to get the High Rez item!

So I do believe that IF the movie that you already own at 720p, is indeed available in the Higher Rez Version - check before trying this, by re-looking up the Movie in the iTunes Store, and, seeing if the info in the small print, now says the HD is also available in 720p/1080p. If your Prefs are set for 1080p in the iTunes app you will get the high rez version!!! Older movies like Dune are not available in Higher Rez, yet?. Next week the new Apple TV comes out and probably in time all movies will be available in 720 &1080p

Too Cool for words! Somebody please test this and let us all know if indeed this is True!!!?

AppleTV 2, Mac OS X (10.7.2), Focal CMS 50's,Duet, LED Display 24, iPhone 4

Doesn't work for me. I have reset all my prefs to download and play 1080p. But when I trash my old version of Wall E and then go to redownload through my "Purchases" section, it redownloads the 720p version. I know this because under the movie section it gives me the file sizes for both 720 and 1080.

It also states that Wall E downloads in 1080p.

But when I download it, it downloads the smaller 720p file size and the aspect ratio is 853x354.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how to get the larger version on my iMac.

What's the new compression format - sounds iffy?

This was always the danger that they offered 1080p without an adequate bitrate.

Not that I was doubting there is a new compression format (or perhaps some advanced h264 options not available on lower powered ATV2 hardware - a bit like CABAC/CAVLC on the ATV1 where CABAC encodes could tax the processor despite being more efficient).

The iffy comment simply relates to the fact that I can't see unless there's a truly revolutionary algorithm that we can roughly double the (in terms of number of pixels) output resolution from 720p to 1080p, and maintain the same compression quality despite higher resolution for the same bitrate.

853x354 is Standard def. 720P is 1280x720 and 1080P is 1920x1080. The last number (Hiegt) of the pixels is how you determine the reolution. This is with a 16:9 Aspect ratio. Movies often use a wider aspect ratio then TV shows so the hiegth will be lower but the width will remain the same. A common 720P movie ratio is 1280x533. In your case it looks like the movie is 480P.

Ars did a good explanation of this:

http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2012/03/new-itunes-1080p-looks-good-through-be tter-h264-compression.ars

Basically it uses better compression that wasn't supported in previous hardware.

There are a variety of flavours of h264 compresion/profiles:

As I was suggesting earlier more powerful processor capability allows more advanced variants or encoding options to be used (these are generally more processor intensive to decode hence the need for more power irrespective of complexity of encoding).

It Does Work. In fact all my instructions are moot!!.. on how to see what movies are upgraded!

After you set your prefs (Playback&Store section in iTunes) to 1080p, just go the New Purchased Items in the Cloud. Click Movies and all the HD Movies that you own that are available in 1080p will be there, waiting for your Download. No jumping through Hoops, looking at each movie to see if it's available in 1080p. I have 89 movies waiting (out of 264) for the upgrade right there, in my Puchased Items WAY COOL!!!! No laborious gymnastics needed. Apple has taken care of us First Class! Thank You Apple.

Yup, thats right! Once you set your prefs to 1080p in the iTunes Store as I outlined in my original post, All your HD movies thar are available in 1080p will be waiting for you to Download.

The Caveat is, you need the newest devices to get them to play. An interesting aside is that It ADDS the High Def copy to your current holdings, it does not Reiplace anything, so you will end up with all 3 formats. If you currently have no way to play the Hi Rez version, a control click, or right Click on a mouse, you will get a contextual menu allowing you to pick the resolution you wish!!

Since I would never watch a movie on my iPhone's I'll just delete the other formats So I end up with just the 1080p copy, not all 3 resolutions. I think if I just delete the whole movie I currently have, the new iTunes will just D/L the new HD 1080p copy. I'll probably recover almost 80gigs of disk space in the procedure. Great as I'm running out of space!!

Good Show Apple, Jolly Good Show bumpitty bummper....
