Journal won't publish to iCloud?

Journals look like a great idea. But I've now created two on my iPad 2 and tried to publish to iCloud but all I get is the spinning wheel which suggests that the file is being transferred, but it never stops spinning. The first journal I tried to publish had about 10 photos, so I thought it might be that the files were too big. So then I tried to publish a journal with a single photot, but got the same behaviour. The spinning wheel spun on for ever.

Anyone any ideas?

I did hear back from the level II tech, the engineers wanted me to set up a test iCloud account to see if the publishing error occurred there, as well; it did. So it's back to the engineers who are, apparently, continuing to work on the issue.

Just wondering how many of those who may have read these posts are having similar problems....?

I have the exact same problems. Can't publish a journal and icloud says 24 of 25 gbs being used. My backups total about 1gb. Spoke to Apple iOS specialist support who said the system showed him 1gb being used 24 gb free, so the exact opposite of what my devices say. Has said he will pass it up to the next level iOS people who normally take 2-3 days to respond. Will report what they say.

Oh hallelujah, I'm so glad it's not just me. I was on the phone with them for an hour the other day, with this same thing: at their end everything looks completely clear, and I am using less than 1gb of storage (having deleted all my backups in frustration!) and yet on all my iOS and OS X devices, I am using more than 24gb of iCloud storage, and keep getting warnings to delete stuff and make room.

Something very fishy in iCloud land!

I heard from Apple support a couple of days ago, also. Same basic news; 'the engineers have the informatioin and are still trying to figure out what's happening'. They (engineers) created a separate iCloud account and I created a new (SIMPLE) journal and tried to upload it to the "Test" account with the same old results.....spinning and spinning.

I've been advised not to hold my brealth......while waiting for an answer; confidence inspiring, eh?

I now really don't care about saving the journal for which I was originally so worried as I saved it to iTunes and uploaded it to a private site and it all runs there without any issues, but my concerns are that we are fairly soon heading out on another juncket and we'd sure like to be able to use the iPad for documenting our travels. If it happens, it happens, if not we'll use our MacBook and Sandvox; not as handy, but it works.

I took a quick look at the Adobe product; it looks like a nice little app to store (for a fee) photos on your various devices, but iPhoto doesn't have any issues with that (at least for me) and I'm not too interested in that function. What's really nice about the iOS iPhoto app is the ability to create and upload journals using your photos and send that URL out to whomever you'd like to share the photos with. That, of course, can be done with a variety of other apps; e.g., Word Press, Sandvox, iWeb, etc. The storage of the photos after downloading from the camera can be done in a number of free storage sites; e.g., Google's Picasso or other fee based sites; e.g., Smugmug. It's the integration of the functions on iPhotos that makes it so functional.....when it's working; which brings us back to the curtrent issue.

Ok, so it's fixed (the iCloud storage problem, not the iPhoto Journal publishing problem, which remains*) 🙂

But don't get your hopes up - this isn't something you can fix yourself. It requires intervention on Apple's behalf. Eventually, after handing over all control to the engineers, they decided the constantly enlarging iCloud backup was due to corrupt "Documents & Data" files from iOS.

The steps they took me through were to go into

  • Settings > Pages
  • Settings > Numbers
  • Settings > Keynote

on both of my iOS devices, and for each of these apps, switch the "Use iCloud" setting OFF

I was then instructed to launch each app, choosing to "Keep files on device" when prompted (incidentally, all the iCloud documents I did have in these apps had disappeared once I'd done this - there was nothing to save! So if you're going to try this, BACK THEM UP first, or move them off iCloud and on to your device).

And that was it... I was told to leave "Documents & Data" switched ON in the Settings > iCloud area, and then they purged the account, or suchlike. Within 48hrs my storage had gone back to close to zero (since I'd stopped backing up my devices to iCloud when this started).

Unfortunately....

  1. This has done nothing for the original Journal publishing to iCloud issue
  2. A side effect of the iCloud "purge" is that all of my Mail Rules + Smart Folders + Signatures have been wiped out of existence. And even with all the relevant preferences files restored from backup, Mail stubbornly re-wipes them every time on launch. So I'm waiting another phone call to see if there's a way round this.

*sigh* iCloud. It's eaten days out of my productivity. Is it ever worth it?

"Anyone have any luck publishing a Journal yet? I haven't."

No. Affer nearly two months of investigating, the report I get is that the engineers have now been able to duplicate the problem and are studying the error logs on the various devices which have been implicated.

One comment I got when mentioning to the level II tech advisor that I had seen other posts from people who were having the same problem was, "there are often posts, but usually from people who haven't reported the problem to Apple Care". That wasn't my impression after reading this forum.....how many here have the publishing problem to iCloud and have reported the issue to Apple Care? Only two? That's probably not a sufficient number to get the Tech Support folks too concerned......
