Ok, so it's fixed (the iCloud storage problem, not the iPhoto Journal publishing problem, which remains*) 🙂
But don't get your hopes up - this isn't something you can fix yourself. It requires intervention on Apple's behalf. Eventually, after handing over all control to the engineers, they decided the constantly enlarging iCloud backup was due to corrupt "Documents & Data" files from iOS.
The steps they took me through were to go into
- Settings > Pages
- Settings > Numbers
- Settings > Keynote
on both of my iOS devices, and for each of these apps, switch the "Use iCloud" setting OFF
I was then instructed to launch each app, choosing to "Keep files on device" when prompted (incidentally, all the iCloud documents I did have in these apps had disappeared once I'd done this - there was nothing to save! So if you're going to try this, BACK THEM UP first, or move them off iCloud and on to your device).
And that was it... I was told to leave "Documents & Data" switched ON in the Settings > iCloud area, and then they purged the account, or suchlike. Within 48hrs my storage had gone back to close to zero (since I'd stopped backing up my devices to iCloud when this started).
Unfortunately....
- This has done nothing for the original Journal publishing to iCloud issue
- A side effect of the iCloud "purge" is that all of my Mail Rules + Smart Folders + Signatures have been wiped out of existence. And even with all the relevant preferences files restored from backup, Mail stubbornly re-wipes them every time on launch. So I'm waiting another phone call to see if there's a way round this.
*sigh* iCloud. It's eaten days out of my productivity. Is it ever worth it?
