My iPad 3 shipped, but no tracking. Why?

Okay, so I got the email saying my iPad 3 shipped. Apple's order status page says it shipped, and gives tracking info. But when I actually go to track the thing, FedEx says it has no information on it. And it's been two days! (Apple says it shipped on March 9th.) Is this normal? What am I supposed to do about it? If the thing shipped two days ago, wouldn't the tracking information show up by now?

These things ship from China, don't they? If it's supposed to get here by the 16th, and it hasn't gone out yet, how can it possibly get here in time?

Oh, don't worry, I don't expect it to actually be *delivered* before the 16th. I just want some acknowledgement in FedEx's system that my package EXISTS in the first place.

Like I said, it's been two days since this thing supposedly shipped, and FedEx has NO information on it. I'm worried that there might have been some kind of glitch and my order got lost. Whenever I've ordered a package shipped by FedEx, no matter who it's from, it's never taken this long for *some* kind of tracking info to show up. I don't even care what it says, even a "Shipping label has been created" or "Shipping info sent to FedEx" message would be fine. Just something, anything...

I thought about disputing the credit card charge with my bank, but they will undoubtedly point to Apple's order status page which says it's "shipped" and will probably not let me dispute the charge (even though I supposedly have the right not to pay for something I never got). As for FedEx? I can't talk to them either, since they apparently have no idea that there IS a shipment. So what am I supposed to do?

Wow. Sounds like your head is going to explode any minute! 😉

I agree with Tonefox. You guys are getting stressed out about nothing. Disputing the credit card charge? All because of lack of a tracking number? Do you realize how ridiculous that sounds? If I were you, I'd just be patient and wait until Friday to see what happens. If the package doesn't arrive as promised, then you can have a hissy fit.

The ASC become crazy mad with folks going bananas about their new products. It is a good week to go on vacation, as will be next week as well when we are deluged with all the "Apple bricked my new iPad" comments.

Apple loves to introduce new products.

Apple likely hates some of the folks who buy them. I know that there are times that I do! 😎

I just spoke to a very helpful UPS rep. He told me the distribution for this product launch is differnt than for previous product launches, for security reasons. If you are in Canada, the UPS information will state it is a domestic not International shipment because they have been drop shipped to Canada, then it becomes a domestic shipment to you.

The online tracking information will not be disclosed until the package is on the truck enroute to your address ( which means it probably won't say that until after you already have your ipad ! lol) apparently this is for security reasons. I don't know if UPS has been hijacked in the past, obviously the rep wouldn't tell me that. He did say this is a new method and all ipads in Canada are scheduled for delivery between Mar.16-22. You should be able to see the tracking info on the morning of your delivery.

I highly doubt that UPS & FedEx have changed their billions of dollars of logistics system for a couple days of deliveries. There are two kinds of iPads: Those with engraving and those without.

Yes, those with engraving will be shipped from China as they are ready, but will not be delivered until the 16th.

But those without engraving will be shipped overnight from the multiple staging locations across the country (US & Canada). These are already stocked and ready to go. Tracking info has already been sent out. I have mine already. The only thing they are doing different from their day-to-day operations is to not deliver before the 16th, so the product is held at these locations until they are ready for transport (Thursday) to the local distribution facilities, then put on the trucks for final delivery (Friday).

And UPS trucks have been hijacked before. I personally know of one which was hijacked when leaving our manufacturing facility on S. Florida a few years back. But remember, hijacking a truck out for deliver with 4 or 5 iPads on it is not worth the risk. You would want the truck leaving a manufacturer with dozens or hundreds, not the trucks out for delivery.

Wow don't shoot the messenger !

Perhaps you need to re read my post, I did not say "FedEx has changed their billions of dollars of logistics system" I said they "drop shipped " to Canada and in case you misunderstood this means shipping a large quantity to 1 facility rather than shipping individual orders. This method is NOT NEW to UPS. What they ARE doing differently is "blocking" the tracking information. These orders show as domestic and tracking will ONLY be shown on the morning of the delivery when the package has left the local depot and is on the truck to your address.. In the past you could track your apple order from China this time you can't . Tracking information for Canadian deliveries has been bocked, Mine still is. This information was confirmed by 2 UPS representatives so unless they are BOTH lying I am assuming it's true.

I didn't shoot anyone. I was just explaining that the shipping process they are using right now (which you describe) is not any different than what they typically do or have done in the past.

But a dropship order is an order fulfilled directly by the manufacturer or 3rd party distributor to the customer. In a few weeks you will see exactly this type of tracking, once the bulk of orders are fulfilled. Right now they are shipping in bulk. As the containers arrive in either the POE or staging location they will then be transfered to last mile transport and will be tracked individually. This is what you explained, but is by no means new or different. It is how containers get tracked.

But again, this is not for all orders (I'm curious if yours is being engraved). I can tell you that my order has tracking information and it has been scanned in multiple locations already.

My iPad 3 shipped, but no tracking. Why?
