Trackpad sensitivity problems

From time to time, I'll move my finger across the trackpad and nothing will happen. This seems to be the biggest problem in Safari, but I've now seen this behavior in Mail and World of Warcraft.

Anyone else?

A few days ago I experienced very significant non-response by the cursor. It was embarassing, too, as several people were gathered around me to see an iPhoto presentation. I vigorously rubbed my finger agains the rug--no improvement. I let my wife use her finger--very little improvement. Finally we got the cursor to the intended location. If this becomes something other than random weirdness, a fix is going to have to be available.

Thank god I found this post, I thought I was crazy.

I really need some advice, I don't know what to do.

June19: I bought my first macbookpro. That night it crashed about 10 times from kernal panics. I brought it back to the apple store and walked out with a brand new macbookpro.

June 20: This one works, but the trackpad button is wobbly, loose, and doesn't really click in certain parts. It makes me sooo mad and frustrated. I return to the apple store and walk out with macbookpro number 3.

June 21: Macbookpro number three is great... but the curser isn't always appearing immediately. Hm... Now it's getting worse. There is always a delay when trying to move the curser, sometimes longer than other. I'd say it's lasted up to five seconds, regardless of program.

WHAT DO I DO? This is my third mbp in less than a week. Is it wrong to think that the $2000 computer should be flawless? Am I being ridiculous, or a righteous consumer?

(Also, please do not tell me I am using the trackpad incorrectly. This is my third macbookpro. I think I can tell something is off here.)

I have found that at times, for whatever reason, moving my fingers to a different area of the trackpad helps. Also, instead of moving it straight up or own, moving it at a angle sometimes helps. Only you can tell if the trackpad is not responding in a reasonable manner, and it shouldn't matter how many others you returned, presuming that Apple wouldn't have accepted them for something they didn't agree with.

I'm not sure what to make to your comment about the cursor not appearing for 5 seconds. After what kind of action?

Before returning #3 you should run Software Update and install any system updates or firmware updates that appear, just to ake sure you and Apple are on the same page re updates created since your MBP left the line.

Hey all,
Just wanted to say that I have the same issue, I knew I'd find something on this in discussions, as it's so obvious. I've owned every style of mac powerbook/ibook through the years, from the Macintosh Portable (Trackball) up, and never had this issue before this MacBook Pro. However, turning off the "ignore accidental trackpad input" immediately seems to have resolved the issue.

Apple does care about their quality, so I'm sure there will be a fix in the near future.
Does anybody know when this option came along in the Keyboard and Mouse sys pref?

I have not checked my previous G4 TiBook, but I will see if the option is there, and see if I can make it behave the same and report back. Meaning this will help determine if it is hardware or software. Vendor on this MacBook Pro for the trackpad is Apple Computer.

Thanks for the insight everyone!

Try to reset the PMU of the computer by taking out the battery and pressing the power button for 5 seconds. and try to test the trackpad again. If that doesn't work try to create a test account and try to use the trackpad again and use the safari and mail application and the last is the world of warcraft just to isolate the issue wether it's system wide or user specific issue. If that doesn't work try to run repair disk using the install disc that came with the computer.

What are you an apple rep? I'm apple certified myself and been through all the usual troubleshooting. It's just there. Even with brand new machines.

So anyhow, As I said in my previous post, I'd do futher testing.

Powerbook g4 DVI, no issues with 10.4.5, and then updated everything to get it up to the same patch levels as my MacBook Pro, no issues, even with "ignore accidental input" checked. It's been checked all along, but never had any reson to go and uncheck it. The option was there in 10.4.5 before I updated, as I mentioned, not sure when they added that option.

Let's not put aside, that it could be the intel versin of the "Keyboard.prefPane", I even tried replacing the pref pane from the PB g4. But of course, it could not be used with the MacBook as it was not intel or universal. Just asked to contact the developer of the software for an updated version. 😉

So no way I know of to determine if it's software or hardware at this point.

I'm sure we'll see an update to this fairly soon, as there's a lot of squak about it.

Just a bit more info, I've been able to reproduce this easily on about 5 macs, 5 pros, and one macbook that I set up last night. Apple servicing is part of my job, so I see a few on a regular basis, and set up new configurations weekly.

Good luck everyone!

This is interesting, as I have an MBP and never have seen it. (But yes, I did turn off the accidental input pref.) I'm curious as to how on identical machines with identical OS versions one could show this problem and the other not. You seem to be saying you could take my machine and reproduce it. If you had my MBP, what would yo do to cause it to display this problem?

If I were to borrow yours, I'd simply use the restore disks to bring it back to defaults. Or you can simply turn on the "ignore acci.." option and use it for a few days to see what happens.
