Why don't all users show up at startup screen?

Now in macOS Sierra you can create a mobile account (i.e. an offline account) for a network user.

for a network account, with this, and the FileVault tip, you should see the network user at the login screen. That's what did it for me.

System preferences --> Accounts --> unlock the panel with admin id (click lock on lower left) --> automatic login off and display login window as list of users

If that is what you have set then there is no obvious reason why all users should not show up in the login list. The user list should be the ones listed in the left panel.

You should do the above when logged into your administrator account.

It doesn't matter to have more than one admin although you might want to coordinate you both changing the same stuff back and forth.

There is no cache for this and there is no obvious reason (to me) why all users are not showing in the login list.

Just out of curiousity type (or copy/paste) the following into a terminal window and post the results if you see anything other than a "does not exist" error message:

sudo defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow HiddenUsersList

You will be prompted for your admin password (in won't echo when you type it). Then hit return.

My iMac mid '11 also will not show additional users on start up. Only when I log in and then log out does it show my room mate account. This obviously defeats the purpose which is to have her boot my machine and use it without my password. I am running 10.7.4

If you have FileVault turned on check the settings. You need to enable users to be able to unlock the disk, once they have that permission then they'll show up on the startup screen.

I too am having this issue. I'm not using file vault and setting as displayed below. The only icon that shows up on startup screen is the Admin. Not sure why I cant pick an icon for my user account too...

Any help greatly appreciated.

why is the first account showing as a Network account? Are you using a Server or Parental Controls? that changes everything if you are.

Correct, if you have your Mac connected to a domain, etc. it's not going to list the network accounts on your login screen, only local accounts will be shown. If you want to login as a network account you have to manually type in your username/password.

Ahhhh, that'll be it then. On a corporate server. I'm sure I've been set up like this in a company and they showed up. Maybe something to do with active directories or something. Way over my head!!

You CAN change this if you like, but it is a little convoluted.

Best to ask your corporate folks to fix it.

On your own Network, you would normally run Workgroup Admin on the Server to change the Managed List and many, many other parameters of a Managed Mac. It turns out, if you are not running a Server, almost anything you can do with Workgroup Admin on the Server, can be done locally running WorkGroup Admin on your computer.

3 Years later and this advice is still helping people. Thanks! This issue has been annoying me for months.

One more thing to check: on my machine both me and my wife's user accounts are admin accounts. The guest log in account was not showing up on the log in screen and I realized that the guest account was turned on in only one of our admin accounts. After turning it on in the other one it showed up at the log in screen.

Helped me too in November 2016.

There should be an option or warning about this in the user preferences. Especially if the particular user is set to have admin privileges.
