I'm still trying this, actually as I type. This didn't totally work for me the first time I tried it, although I was able to get a backup and a sync with my iPhone 3gs. What happened was after doing all of this with the iPhoto create new library, etc, I went for a walk and tried to just the iPod on the iPhone and there was no album art and when I selected any playlist and shuffle, nothing would play.

Back from my no music walk. When I clicked on the Photos selection in iTunes while syncing it caused another crash of iTunes. So, like I said i'm trying James's fix again to see if I missed a step.

I'll post again to hopefully also confirm the fix.

ok, that worked, in that the album art is back on the iPhone and the playlists finally played. So, I have a current backup and a new sync. I noticed that I don't generally sync iPhoto anyway, so it's checked to not sync on connection.

I did go back to the original iPhoto libarary and connected the iPhone again and it caused an immediate crash. So, what do we have here? Is it that iPhoto 9 just doesn't work with iTunes 10.6 unless there are no photos in the photo library? My OS is OS X 10.7.3.

Feel free to chime in because i'm totally confused now.

FWIW, I have a slightly different issue (and posted a new discussion for it). Same thing, just got a new iPad and 10.6 and it's Books, Movies or TV Shows tabs in the sidebar that will 100% crash iTunes.

AND I am NOT willing to toss the library file I have spent years getting configured the way I want it... nor do I want to re-create 400+ smart playlists that depend on number of plays and when the song was last played to work.
