I'm still trying this, actually as I type. This didn't totally work for me the first time I tried it, although I was able to get a backup and a sync with my iPhone 3gs. What happened was after doing all of this with the iPhoto create new library, etc, I went for a walk and tried to just the iPod on the iPhone and there was no album art and when I selected any playlist and shuffle, nothing would play.
Back from my no music walk. When I clicked on the Photos selection in iTunes while syncing it caused another crash of iTunes. So, like I said i'm trying James's fix again to see if I missed a step.
I'll post again to hopefully also confirm the fix.
ok, that worked, in that the album art is back on the iPhone and the playlists finally played. So, I have a current backup and a new sync. I noticed that I don't generally sync iPhoto anyway, so it's checked to not sync on connection.
I did go back to the original iPhoto libarary and connected the iPhone again and it caused an immediate crash. So, what do we have here? Is it that iPhoto 9 just doesn't work with iTunes 10.6 unless there are no photos in the photo library? My OS is OS X 10.7.3.
Feel free to chime in because i'm totally confused now.
Thank YOU!!!!. 🙂
After several days trying to figure out WTH, I finally can sync once again.
I upgraded my iPhoto to v. 9.2.2 (iPhoto 11) and this solved my problem of being unable to sync my iPad and iPod after installing iTunes 10.6 (caused the iTunes to crash). Hope this helps others, as it is SO frustrating!!!!
Worked for me! I am also an Aperture user, and don't have any use for iPhoto. Until now, I was unable to sync my iPad3 with iPhoto. All other devices were fine. When I created a new empty photo library for iPhot 9, I was amazed to see my iPad3 work properly in iTunes. YAY
FWIW, I have a slightly different issue (and posted a new discussion for it). Same thing, just got a new iPad and 10.6 and it's Books, Movies or TV Shows tabs in the sidebar that will 100% crash iTunes.
AND I am NOT willing to toss the library file I have spent years getting configured the way I want it... nor do I want to re-create 400+ smart playlists that depend on number of plays and when the song was last played to work.
Thank you James. It worked.
thank you, thank you. setting up empty iphoto library worked. hope it is fixed "correctly" soon. appreciate it.
Where is Apple on this? There should be a bug fix now for iTunes that does not require this kind of monkey wrenching. What's the deal Apple?
NOT working for me. Did all the iPhoto stuff, 10.5 downgrade, ect. Every time I plug in my external music drives iTunes crashes on both my new iMac and MacBook Pro. Never did this in previous versions. Apple needs to do some serious upgrading to the bloatware iTunes has become.
Thanks James who loves ya
Thanks GJ7 this worked for me, too! 🙂
But where is Apple on this? Why do we have to upgrade to iPhoto 11 just to keep iTunes happy? Are software sales so low? 😠
All fixed with iPhoto update. Crazy that Apple didn't fix it 😠
And also from me to Mr McDermott: THANK YOU! You save my day. Greetings from Munich, Germany
I bow to you sir.
iTunes crashed when selecting iPad. Did library thing to iPhoto (9). Worked a treat.🙂🙂
