Woohoo great job changing libraries worked.
Another workaround although not ideal since you can't change your sync settings:
you can synce from the file menu without opening the device.
Worked for me too. Now I can sync my ipod. So how do you make your original iphoto library the default so you don't have to open iphoto with the option key to get to it? Thanks James!
I had the same problem. Just got an iPad 2 and upgraded to Lion 10.7.3 (to be able to sync everything in iCloud) and iTunes 10.6, Itunes would then crash everytime I selected my iphone in the Devices list in iTunes. Long story short, after 1 1/2 hours on the phone today with Apple tech support (we deleted plists and caches with no fix) there was an admission from the "senior" techs that there was actually a known incompatibiity with iPhoto 09 and Lion causing this problem and that a solution was being worked on.
By deleting the AlbumData.xml file in iPhoto 09 everything worked fine (except iPhoto). The choice was disable iPhoto 09 by removing that file and wait for Apple to come up with a fix or upgrade to iPhoto '11. I chose tha latter for $14.99. All is now smooth.
Why it took that long to find that out I don't know. Sounds like there is an information hierarchy at Apple tech support that let's people know (techs included) there is a problem like this only when all else fails.
The tech guy I worked with was great and worked calmly and methodically to find a solution. It took a call "upstairs" to learn that there was a known software issue. BTW you have 90 days of tech support when you upgrade to Lion. Did not know that.
I just told iPhoto 9 to use the old library again and everything still works. Apparently others can't revert to old iPHoto library eh?
James you're a star - took me ages to find the right forum that tackled the issue. It's a clear bug with OS 5.1 and iPhoto, and I have no intention of updating iPhoto to 11 as I already have Aperture and Adobe CS.
My new iPad would crash iTunes but my old one (synched with Aperture) wouldn't, and my Touch with 5.01 was also fine, while iPhone with 5.1 crashed iTunes.
Thanks!
FIXED by Apple!!!!
iTunes 10.6.1 (7) was released today -- 3/30/12
I installed and it appears to have fixed the issue.
Good luck everyone
