Well, here's the flip side to that coin. Over the last dozen years or so, I've owned around six or seven devices of different type. Had I purchased AppleCare or some other extended warranty, I would have shelled out about $700 or so (I'm estimating). What would that have gotten me? ZIP. I've NEVER had to have an Apple device repaired. In fact, I've typically sold them on eBay for a little extra coin when they were replaced.

Yes, it does feel good to not have to pay for repairs to something. But when you look at the big picture, extended warranties as a whole don't really save you any money.

There's the rub. Afterall, companies really push these extended warranties simply because they are great revenue makers for them. They know that most people will never make a claim, and so they make a very healthy profit off the extended warranties. They especially count on the "you never know what may happen" argument as it preys on people's own worst case scenario fears, even though most people will never face that scenario with their purchase.

CNET or one of the tech sites last year ran a piece that claimed that based on published failure rates, modern consumer electronics (they looked at flat screen TV's, laptops and computers, ereaders and digital cameras - maybe some other categories too, I cannot remember) are the some of if not the most reliable mass produced products ever made by humans. Extended warranties are your roll of the dice with your money, and as with all gambling, the house sets the rules and they never lose.

I don't usually get ext. warranties but an IPad like a digital camera by It's very nature is very likely to get dropped or banged around. The price of the extended warranty was reasonable. I opted for it. I'm into this 64gb 4G IPad for over $800 It seemed like a good idea to me. You know how it is. If you get it you'll probably never need it. If you don't you'll wish you had. Maybe that's just my luck.

I think that comparing computers to iOS devices is comparing oranges to pears. I would get SquareTrade accidental damage insurance. It is US$89 right now and you can get it for $79 if you Like ST on FaceBook. It extends Apple's manufacturer's warranty an extra year, provides accidental damage coverage and is not limited to two iOS replacements. That beats Apple CAre+ and is $20 cheaper.

ST says that 1 out of 3 of its policy holder's for the iPad 2 have had to have their iPad replaced/repaired at least once. iOS devices are hand held, they are much more likely to befall an accident than a computer, even a laptop.
