iTunes Update: Installer has Insufficient Privileges

"The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory. C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start\Menu\Programs\iTunes. The installer cannot continue. Log on as administrator or contact your system administrator."

System specs: Windows 7, x32 or x64, fully patched & SP'd

I just worked with my cousin in Colorado over Skype to get this resolved. This is a fairly obscure error, and if you try to edit the permissions of the folder, run the installer as an administrator, log on as an administrator and run it, no actions seemed to resolve the problem. We did get it fixed, which involved the following steps. Not all of these may be strictly required, but hey, it worked for me. ;-)

1. Download the latest iTunes installer

2. Rt. click the installer, select 'Properties'

3. Click on 'Unblock', then click Apply, then OK.

4. Click on the Windows icon and type 'uac' (no quotes)

5. Click on 'Change User Account Control Settings'

6. Move the slider down to 'Never Notify' (NOTE: This will require a reboot)

7. Rt. click the installer and select 'Run as administrator' from the context menu

8. Let the installer complete (it should now)

9. Open 'Change User Account Control Settings'

10. Return the slider to the position you found it on (likely 2nd from the top)

Hopefully this helps you resolve this issue. All the best, iTuners!

Please tell me there is an answer!! This is driving me crazy!!

Once everything hopefully installs will all of my music/videos/apps & everything else still be there the way it was before this hassle started?

SOLUTION

I think I found another way to get it to work... This is what I did:

Right click, properties, and click on unblock, just like you said.

And then go to Compatibility tab, on bottom where it says security level, check box for "Run this program as administrator". Apply, OK.

And then, rightclick the iTunes Icon again, and I clicked Run as Admin just to be sure it knows how badly I wanted it to run in Admin mode, and it worked... I did not mess with UserAccessControl at all

MY SOLUTION:

SO…I tried all of the above to no avail, except that now I couldn’t update or restore iTunes. Kept getting messages saying that I had “insufficient privileges” even though I had changed every suggested attribute and ownership with endless registry clean-ups and reboots.

My solution (tried out of desperation) was to

(1) do a system restore to a couple of days ago (before most of my serious fidgeting)

(2) create a new directory on my c:\ drive (which I called ScratchPad)

(3) copy the following two directories (you may only have one) to the new directory c:\ProgramData\{93E26451-CD9A-43A5-A2FA-C42392EA4001} and c:\ProgramData\ 34BE82C4-E596-4e99-A191-52C6199EBF69, and then

(4) deleted both c:\ProgramData\{93E26451-CD9A-43A5-A2FA-C42392EA4001} and c:\ProgramData\ 34BE82C4-E596-4e99-A191-52C6199EBF69 (figured I could always copy them back from c:\ScratchPad if I needed to)

(5) rebooted the computer and then ran iTunes64Setup.exe as administrator

iTunes now works, as do both of my CD drives

(Windows 7 Ultimate, iTunes 11.1.0.126)

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
