On your Android device there shoud be a method for turning on USB mass storage mode. Check your manual. Once done you can connect to the Mac via usb and the device should appear on the desktop as a drive icon that you can open and browse.

Mac OS X does not support MTP natively. Your options:
(1) Try to set your Android device to MSC, as indicated by Dansyacht; but not all Android devices support MSC.
(2) Try Android File Transfer, which supports MTP
