iTunes 10.6 and proxy server connection

Hello,

I was using iTunes, in a network enviroment with a proxy server, since yesterday when I updated it to 10.6 version.

Troubles began...

My IE settings about proxy server are correct, and my network admin did not change anything in out proxy configuration. Thus, I checked IE proxy settings, and they are ok (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1470). Restared my PC, but iTunes after the login to my proxy server (NOT with appleid of course but with my network account - and it's works, I'm sure about it) cannot go on, with a 12002 error.

So, IMHO iTunes 10.6 proxy support is broken...

I'm having no issues at all with anything in the store...including podcasts. My guess is that you don't have something set up correctly in the cntlm.ini file. You must edit the cntlm.ini file and put in your username, password, domain and proxy server info. For example...

username johndoe

domain mydomain.com

password Mypassword!1

proxy 192.168.0.1:8080

The proxy info is typed in with the IP address then a colon and then the port number for the proxy server. Also, go in to services and verify that the CNTLM Authenticaiton service is running. Hope this helps.

I did set it up like that exaclty, This then allowed me to bale to browse the store and even go to my podcasts, in essence itunes connects to the net now, but when i try and get my podcast or update them then it asks me to log into the "new proxy" that points to cntlm, i.e 127.0.0.1:3128 there is nowhere to set a password for 127.0.0.1:3128 and the ini file does not give a default one.

I have been having this problem for months now , are Apple actually working on a fix for this ?

Can't really attempt the fix as suggested in this thread as my company would go mental if it is a security risk also don't think I have admin access.

Fininding it really annoying as can't sync/update my iphone apart from using wi-fi at home.😠

Hello everyone,

I have this issue too and I also can't apply the proposed solution with a static proxy configuration tool.

I'm a system engineer in a big company and it's against all our security restriction to safe user credentials in clear text on a machine.

To avoid the issue i did not do the rollout of ITunes 10.6 until now. 10.5 is still working good. So there is no big pressure to solve the issue, but anyway it would be nice to stay up to date.

So I want to ask, if there is already a fix for the issue or if there is a schedule to fix this issue?

Regards,
The Magic Engineer

Yes, I tried your fix and it worked at the beginning. I was able to type in my proxy credentials into itunes. But there are still two issues. First, itunes does not save the credentials properly. Second, itunes does not automatically detect the windows proxy configuration. You can't expect from a user, that he is able to type in his proxy configuration by himself. Must user doesn't even know what a proxy is =).

However, your solution is nice for small environments, but for an engineer of a company with tousands of machines it's no solution. Way to much effort to get all the machines working again ;-).

Anyway, thanks a lot for your efforts....

Sincerely,
The Magic Engineer

Hello all,

I'm experiencing this issue with build 10.6.3.25 on Windows 7 x64 inside a corporate environment. As I am in a corporate environment it means that any solution suggesting credentials being stored in a plain text password file are not going to be approved due to the outragous risk imposed by such.

In our environment, Group Policies set the iTunes proxy settings for Internet Explorer and iTunes then reads these settings but seems to have no ability to save the credentials for later use.

A rather simple solution to stop this issue occurring at program launch would be to implement an iTunes feature to not connect to the iTunes store on startup. Asking for authentication when you're actually trying to do something which requires internet connectivity isn't as much of an issue; however users being asked immediately, repeatedly to authenticate at application launch is terrible design.

I'm curious if anyone has managed to progress any further towards a resolution of this issue as I would be very keen on discussing it.

I'm rather shocked at the complete lack of Apple representation within this thread (and the entire discussions forums) as this is clearly a bug with iTunes. If no one has found a magic solution (hinting at The Magic Engineer here) for this bug, I'll officially report it to Apple and see what they have to say for their lack of action.

Thanks in advance!

Lucidite.
