iPhone 4S no sound except ringtones works

No sounds work on my iphone except ringtones. Text tones, email, itunes, pandora, etc. does not play anything. Also, when I hit the volume buttons I get a picture of the speaker and it says "ringer" over it but there is no volume bar. I've cleaned out the headphone jack since that fixed a no-sound problem on previous iPhones but it didn't help.

I've tried turning bluetooth/wifi on and off because this seemed to help for some people but the only thing that helped with is that my phone now makes the noise when you plug it in to charge but still nothing else but ringtones.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

O-M-G, FINALLY!! Thank you soooo much Blueloony!! I have tried almost every single thing to fix the messed up sound on my iphone 4s and yours was the only one (that I've been able to find so far), that actually gives a step by step on how to check in somewhere else in settings to see whats going on!! No matter which help forum you go to gives the same answer, but its really a question! People reply to pleas for help 99% of the time with, "Are you sure your phone isn't on mute? Check to see if it is and unmute it." BUT WHERE DO I DO THAT...HOW DO I DO THAT IN MY SETTINGS??? That's what I dont know how to do!! I'm not an iphone whiz at all, so I kept going to "sounds" in my settings, but no luck. I mean, I didnt even know you could mute your phone other than when you're on the phone! haha I'm fairly new to Apple products and Im learning thanks to this place, but people seem to forget that not everyone knows exactly where to go or how to get there! So when I found your advice about going to settings>general>assistive touch>click it on then touch the little white ball and so on, I was surprised that whole deal even existed! hahahaha Like why does everyone reply to help posts automatically assuming we all know everything about the product? Ugh I swear I'm not an idiot, I just did-not-know is all! 😟 To be honest, I still don't know what it is I just did under that assistive touch thingy, but it worked like a champ! haha I will say I couldnt tell if it was muted or unmuted, so it took me a couple of tries and then reopening my game app to see if I'd unmuted it, so I might be a little bit of a dingbat about that, but I got it in the end. Oh, and I also did a hard boot on my iphone after I finished?? Is that what its called? And now I'm good to go, YAY! It's just the weirdest thing though because I have NO IDEA how that happened or how I did it, whatever but it was only my game apps and videos I was recording that had no sound....I had had perfect sound with my youtube and music etc apps so....I dunno??

But thank you very much for advice and HOW & WHERE TO, step by step go and check in another area of settings besides "sounds!" Newcomers like me appreciate very much when we find help like your post offered! I'm just so excited and relieved to have found a solution!!! 🙂

did you make sure your iphone isn't mute ?

Try this:

Settings>General>Accessibility>AssistiveTouch>Toggle AssistiveTouch On

you'll notice a "white ball" on your screen (aka AssistiveTouch)

Touch the white ball>Device>Mute>Unmute (nd result should make your iPhone unmute)

now try.

Alternatively,

Do a Restore.

Steps for Mac/PC.

1. Open iTunes, Backup your iPhone

2. Click iPhone in the left plane

3. Select Restore (on the right plane)

4. Follow onscreen setup (on the iPhone) until the set up iphone.

5. Select restore iPhone (select iTunes)

Note: you iTunes library need to be re-synced after this process.

Hope this helps,

Blueloony

Thanks!

I too found that cleaning worked. Here's my combined summary of your suggestions and one other set of instructions.

  1. Use a tooth brush ore a small brush from a hair trimmer, electric shaver or grooming kit.
  2. Thoroughly but gently brush the charging port for about 15 seconds. (This worked for me after a couple of tries. The problem returned a few months later but this worked again.)
  3. If that’s not enough, dip the brush in isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and lightly scrub the charging port for about 10 seconds.
  4. Dry it with compressed air. If it still doesn’t work, try a few more times.

This is obviously a common problem. I wish the port had a flip cover or something. I think I'll add some tape to the opening in the bottom of my plastic cover and when I need to connect the phone, I'll remove the plastic cover.

Iphone 5 - had the same problem:

headphones would work for all sounds, music, etc, but the external phone speaker would only work for changing and selecting ringtones (??!). When I pressed the volume buttons or the mute switch, it would think it was sending sound through the headphones. This happened after a very small splash of water got on the bottom of the phone.

I tried a trick with a cut q-tip dipped in a little Windex (a clip of this is online: http://thebigboss.org/guides-iphone-ipod-ipad/iphone-speaker-issues)

Didn't work, but got some gunk out.

Waited a while, then here's what did it:

I took one of those bubble things that comes with an ear-wax removal kit (also the kind to suck snot out of babies' noses). I sucked through the headphone jack and speaker "grille" several times, and then also blew puffs of air into them several times.

Worked LIKE A CHARM, all is better!
